Definitely not normal... at least mine didn’t come with any of that stuff. You must have received a returned case or something.

Would it make a good makeup bag?

If you're needing to pack the essentials, yes. It's the perfect size for just the basics.. foundation, powder, blush, your liners and mascara. If you're a simple girl like me, this would make for a convenient go-to bag. If you're needing it for multiple bottles, brushes, and a bunch of other things, then no. I could use this bag for all my makeup and toss in my toothbrush and travel size toothpaste. Never thought of using it as a makeup bag but you just gave me an idea lol. Hope this helps!

Is the pen/pencil case and zipper are of good quality

I personally think it is very nice quality for a pencil pouch. It’s a relatively thick and durable sort of nylon on the outside, and the inside lining is a sort of quilted thinner material. The zipper is also very durable and glides smoothly. I am a college student, and I’ve had this pencil pouch for a little over a year now, and it still looks brand new.
