To buy or not to buy
I've been looking for a bass to replace my 30 year old Ibanez. I reviewed all the standard axes in the under $400 price range, and while there's a lot of solid options in this range, nothing really stood out to me. I was wandering through Amazon when I stumbled upon this bass. I did my research on this, and most of the reviews I found were negative, ranging from fit and finish problems with the body and neck, and poorly performing electronics. I honestly don't know why I went ahead with my purchase of this bass. But I'm glad I did.First, the craftsmanship and assembly of the bass was absolutely flawless. The bolt on neck was precision fit, with no slop or play whatsoever The zebra top over the maple body is truly gorgeous. The picture doesn't do it justice. Now on to the electronics. The pots are solid and functional. The actual wiring of the bass did not match the specifications posted on the Boulder Creek website, but a quick review under the hood resolved that mystery. The bass control provides an impressive punch and associate growl. The treble adds a nice high end that meshes well with the action. The mid produces a hum through my practice amp that is a bit concerning. Not a problem when playing, but is noticeable otherwise. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. For the price you absolutely can't go wrong with this bass. A hard case is included for the price, and while not special, it get's the job done.

Poor Craftsmanship
Though this may look nice in a picture, when I got it in my hands it was obvious that no good quality control was used in making this instrument. The neck and body met poorly with a good gap between the edges and were not properly flush. The well around the bolt holes that attach the neck to the body had chipped finish. A couple of inlays were not flush and also had gaps between the edge some of the inlays and the fingerboard. There were light, small, but definite scratches on the finish and a small but definite ding in the fingerboard. I can't talk about how it sounded because the neck was way out of adjustment and I was so disappointed by the other problems that it didn't seem worth the trouble to adjust it for play since it was already clear it was not a keeper. As for the hard case, it looked very nice from the outside, but the padding inside had already been squished out of form (presumably from the bass bouncing around inside it in its travels) and the velvet was poorly installed and already starting to come loose in some places. If you have to buy a budget bass in this price range, I would definitely recommend the Peavey Grind over this shiny waste of time. I have had one for about a year and have enjoyed the solidity and craftsmanship of the instrument as well as the tone and sustain of the neck-through design. Bottom line, if you care about the details, look to a different manufacturer.
