Brilliant collaboration. Be sure to get the CD/DVD combo package
This review is of the CD/DVD version. My first Snarky Puppy album was "Sylva" which is terrific and the accompanying DVD makes the album priceless. Same here. I missed Volume One somehow but I'll go back for it. This album was for a charitable event, The Roots of Music Foundation of New Orleans. This edition of Snarky Puppy includes 18 band members. Add to that at various times, 13 musicians from NOLA International, 8 guest vocalists and 14 guest instrumentalists and you get some idea of what the management of this assemblage required. On top of it all is SP founder Michael League who is most prominent here on anything bass oriented. The mixture of the primary songs (8 on CD) is jazz, Brazilian, African, Appalachian and rock. And everything is perfectly performed. If you've ever seen one of those tribute concerts where everyone comes out for the finale and you have 7 or 8 guitarists, 3 or 4 drummers and everyone singing a well known song, you know what a melange of misery it can all become after a while. Here, with a similar count, it is all perfectly presented. While all of the songs are well done, what really stokes me about this package is the DVD (alas no Blu ray) which contains lossy (compressed) options including Dolby Digital 2.0 and Dolby Digital 5.1. They work well by the way. In addition to the songs from the CD, the group adds 5 more. The order varies from the CD so don't be shocked. Interspersed between some of the performances are short artist interviews (I think with League) which are much more than the usual questions of "who were your influences." They talk about the emotion of music, how it affects their life. In one interview, I think with Charles Turner, he talks about how he tried numerous musical instruments growing up and played them all...badly. Then he realized his instrument was his voice. Bingo!Taken as a whole, if you have the video capabilities, I recommend you watch and listen to the DVD. Once you've watched the interviews, they can be skipped on subsequent plays. This is a great album, but the video takes it over the top.

Highly recommended for musical adventurists.
I was sold on this CD/DVD release after seeing some of the performances on PBS one evening, beginning with Becca Stevens and the great Scandinavian band Väsen playing her song “I Asked” (check out the version on her terrific album “ Perfect Animal ”). The music here involves a wide variety of artists, ranging from Susana Baca and Salif Keita to Ivan Neville and Charlie Hunter. Even the track by David Crosby (whom I normally dislike and avoid for personal reasons) is quite good and rather subdued relative to most of the performances here, making a nice closing piece to these performances. Overall, this is an excellent mix of musical performers--a mix for which the DVD is actually better than the CD (not often the case).

Excellent band = excellent albums
Nothing you buy from Snarky Puppy will disappoint. I liked Family dinner v. 1 better and you must admit there really is no follow up to Sylva. Sylva for me, is one of the greatest albums - of ALL TIME. That being said, it's against state law to not buy Snarky Puppy or Hiromi Uehara. :-) It's the best music out there right now.

Exciting jazz ensemble
Snarky Puppy is my new favorite jazz ensemble. Great songs, fantastic musician virtuosos, and incredible performers. This is a special release thanks to the DVD bundle therein. But there is a lot of Snarky Puppy on YouTube if you want to check them out, which I highly recommend.

This is good
there are some groovin' moments. I wish they could've put just a little more into the overall arrangements on a few of the tunes.

Big Band Jazz eccezionale

The Joy of It
Snarky Puppy act as the background for a wide range of artists to show their talents. The quality of musicianship is fabulous as ever. A great showcase for the joy of music.
