On the inside of the bowl is Lake Atitlan in Guatemala (the world's second most beautiful lake) which is surrounded by mountains and three thickly forested volcanoes. Flanked on all sides of the lake are the seven centuries old Maya villages which still thrive today. On the south western shore is the village of Santiago Atitlán where the world famous Tzutujil Mayans live. They believe the lake is the Mother and they call her C'Tie. Fluffy clouds drift over C'Tie between the mountains and late in the morning every day the wind whips up the water and creates whitecaps. The glyphs on the lake bottom in Mayan say "Muyal chan ha'" which means "Cloud in the sky over water". The jaguar, which is a powerful ancient Maya symbol in Guatemala, is on the outside of the bowl in the forests of the volcanoes where they still live, lording over their wilderness habitat in ever dwindling numbers. The main colours of the bowl are green, blue and ochre. The medicine bowl measures 4" tall x 7 1/2" wide (10cm x 19cm). To clean your altar bowl use a soft damp cloth. Do not immerse the bowl in water. Ideal for an altar, this bowl is made to hold sweet grass or sage - something to connect you to your spirit and of those spirits which surround you. Don't burn it in your bowl though!
