Caribsea Reptilite Habitat, 10-Pound, Smokey Sands

Recently, I purchased 3 types of sandy substrate for a breeding pair of 6 year old Leopard Geckos'. Although I am aware that there is a lot of controversy surrounding sand and sand-like substrates, these Geckos have lived on it for most of their lives and they are doing phenomenally well. I purchased 20# of Aztec Gold Caribsea Reptilite Habitat (4 stars), 25# of Desert White Zoo Med ReptiSand (4 stars) , and (2) 10# bags of Orange ZooMed Vita Sand (1 star).The Aztec Gold Caribsea Reptilite Habitat is a calcium substrate that is much coarser than the other (2) brands - even though the VitaSand is a calcium substrate, too. Unlike the VitaSand, however, there was no dust storm when we poured the sand in the tank - a huge plus! The Aztec Gold is lighter gold in person than in the photo. In fact, it was very close to the same color as Desert White ReptiSand that I received. Unlike the ReptiSand, the Caribsea is consistent in color throughout. Out of the (2) calcium substrates, I preferred this one despite it being coarser because it is dust free, it did not stain my hands, and it was cheaper on a per pound basis. Although the ad showed a long ship time, it was delivered in under 2 weeks. If the color had been depicted more accurately and it had been as fine textured as the other (2) , I would have given it 5 stars. If I could only re-order one of the three, I would purchase this one.

This came up when I was searching for 'peat moss for tortoises' so I thought I was buying moss. I now know the search tries it's best....the color of this is green moss so I was confused. I am sure I am almost the only one who didn't know this, but for you other new people, this is sand. It does say calcium carbonate under the word reptile on the bag but I thought, oh cool, humidifying moss...that i guess they might eat....and after it arrived I then knew the entire bag was calcium carbonate sand. I am sure it is great for beardys and other desert reptiles as substraight so for that I would give it a 5 star rating. I never like to give a low rating to a quality product that is great for it's purpose with the right animals but it has a tortoise on the bag and I don't feel this sand appropriate for land tortoises - so buyer beware if you have a land tortoise, ignore this if you have a lizard. I covered it with forest floor thinking she could dig in it and make a cool spot. When it gets on her feet, she goes to her water bowl and dips her feet in one by one to clean the sand off. It's a very cute but slow process, especially for the back feet for her to back up to the water that she can't see to put her foot slowly down down down into the water and awkwardly move her foot up and down.....so she does not like this sand and goes to great effort to remove it. She wanted me to tell you that.

This is a great color, and my hamster loves to dig around in it. It's a smokey blackish gray. The dust content seems pretty low.I didn't like the bag itself. It's tightly packed, so it makes it hard to open without spilling.

Use this sand for years now. Great price. My breadies love it.

I have a leopard gecko. I always liked this sand and very hard to find the reptilite brand in stores stores near me anymore. Love the color

The reptiles love it, we use it for our tarantula and scorpion as well. Can't really say much more about it, it is what we use all the time. Just our local pet store closed down. Will be buying it regularly.

It is very nice looking sand, but I movies it almost makes my snake's feces smell twice as bad, as well as it kept getting stuck under his scales.
