Bully Tools 68" Steel Tamping Digging Bar, Heavy Duty Spud Bar

This is one of those tools that seems almost absurdly simple until you actually need one. Then you wonder how you ever managed without it. I bought this spud bar in 2019 and have used it for everything from removing shrubs to digging out rocks to taking down a surprisingly large crape myrtle. Whenever a project reaches the point where shovels, mattocks, and brute force stop being effective, this is usually what comes out next. What makes it so effective is the combination of weight and leverage. The bar carries enough momentum to: * cut through stubborn roots * break up compacted soil * pry out large rocks * loosen deeply established shrubs and small trees It's heavy, but that's exactly why it works. One thing I noticed is that the shaft does have some flex when you're really leaning on it during prying operations. But after years of use I've never experienced any permanent bending or deformation. The flex actually seems beneficial when applying a lot of leverage. Durability has been excellent. After six years of hard use it remains one of the most useful landscaping tools I own. That said, I do want to offer a word of caution because I think people underestimate these things. Of all the tools in my shop and yard, this is probably the one I've managed to injure myself with the most. That's not a fault of the tool—it's a consequence of what it is. The combination of: * significant weight * long reach * sharp working end * high momentum means you need to stay aware of where it's going at all times. When that cutting end is several feet away from your hands, it's surprisingly easy to lose track of what it, or you, are about to hit. I genuinely put spud bars in the category of tools that deserve respect right alongside chainsaws and table saws. They're incredibly effective, but they aren't something to use carelessly. If you regularly tackle: * landscaping projects * shrub removal * root cutting * rock removal * tough digging jobs this is an outstanding tool and worth every penny. Just remember that it's not a glorified digging bar—it's a serious piece of equipment that can generate a tremendous amount of force. Treat it accordingly and it'll make difficult outdoor projects dramatically easier.

If you are digging holes and need to chop through things like roots, old boards or posts, or pry stones out of the way, this is for you. Nothing about it is delicate, and nothing about it is light. This is a serious tool that will give you a serious workout when you use it, but will do the job when lesser tools might bend or break. I like how the chisel end is wider than most, it seems to get more done per swing without being oversized, which works well for breaking up extremely hard soils or even things like prying sidewalk pavers up. Well made in the USA with heavy steel, and comes with a lifetime warranty.

I like Bully tools and have switched most of my digging tools to bully tools. This digging bar works well for clay and soil with tree roots and construction debris. New homes tend to have a bunch of construction debris in the top soil and then you hit the clay a foot or so into the hole. This bar makes quick work of the debris and easily cuts the clay. This is not a pry bar and when used as intended I don’t expect that I will ever need to replace the tool. I like the larger cutting head compared to the big box bars that have a 1 inch taper head. Well worth the investment IMHO.

I ordered the 58" Bully Tools Steel Tamping and Digging Bar and it arrived on schedule. I was hoping to use this as a less expensive alternative to some other tools that are on the market for removing bamboo roots, but found that the steel is not appropriately tempered for that level of prying and the bar bent more easily than I expected. It should work fine as a digging and tamping tool....

It was exactly what I wanted. Exceeded my expectations!!!

I grew up in NYC and moved to the country - a farmer came over to give me a hand and had something like this - though it was his grandfather's - called it a "shale bar" - right away I knew that I needed one of these here on our farm. I got this and the 48" for smaller jobs along with this bigger one. This is a well made heavy tool for digging and anything to do with ground work - putting up posts or planting trees - it's great for loosening dirt, cutting buried roots or stones. It can "tamp" dirt down and make it hard. Well made, good design and weight - will probably outlast your lifetime!
