Digital Persona 88003-001U.are.u 4500 Reader 70" Cable

I am writing a review for this device because finding a fingerprint reader that works, out of the box, with Ubuntu is not easy. I tested some other devices and they did not work well. I am giving five stars because the device worked when connected with no issues. I plugged it in and it worked, which is not typical for Linux. The vendor does offer drivers for Linux if needed, but I did not have to install them. I think the drivers are more for developers working with this device. For users who simply want the convenience of fingerprint unlock for Ubuntu, this works well. Note that my five star for the device should not be misconstrued for a five star experience on Linux. By design Linux is more secure and not going to allow as much flexibility as Windows does where you can pretty much use a fingerprint in place of a password. Apple has also put more design time in to make fingerprint reader more functional, although users of Mac will see some similarities when using Linux. By design you cannot use fingerprint reader to decrypt a disk. If you set up your disk with encryption, know that when you power on or reboot, you will need to enter your password to decrypt. While you can use fingerprint to login you will find that immediately after logging in you will be prompted to enter your password for your keyring. This is again, by design, or at least the way Ubuntu works. What I'm saying is its not a bug. Where Apple seems to have done the work to use fingerprint for keyring, Ubuntu has not. Since it is open source, perhaps someone will tackle this in the future, but for now keyring requires a password. There are work arounds like setting the keyring to use a blank password, but this is not recommended. Essentially, the fingerprint can be used to unlock your screen, and it can be used in place of a password for sudo, which is very convenient. Third-party products like 1Password will also use fingerprint for unlock, but just like the built in keyring, the initial login after a reboot requires you to enter the password the first time you open it. I call this out because this reader is not cheap, so the user needs to determine if the convenience is worth the price. I can tell you that quality wise this appears to be a solid device that is made well. It has metal in the construction, feels solid, and has weight to it. So if you want the convenience, and the price is not an issue for you, then it can make working with an Ubuntu desktop a bit easier. I was very pleased that it worked right out of the box with no additional drivers needed. I am currently running Ubuntu 21.04 with GNOME 3.38.5.

This Digital Persona u.are.u 4500 fingerprint reader does work on a laptop running linux mint 22.3. Remember to disable linux mint auto-login if you enabled it during installation if you wish to use it to authorize logging in. It will work for other security prompts such as SUDO or updates regardless.

Worse purchase that I have ever made through Amazon. No instructions on how to connect to a computer. Found the manufacturer’s website and tried to download drivers. No luck. Requested a refund/return to Amazon only to find out I to return it to the manufacturer. They accepted the return and instructed me to print the mailing label. My printer is not working and was offered they would print and send me the label. A week later and pass return deadline- no label. I called Amazon customer service. No help at all. I give up and will never purchase from a sponsor on Amazon ever again. Definitely don’t purchase this scanner. Nothing but junk.

Updated 21 November 2015 - Windows 10! (May work with 8.1 too) Note: To date I have only gotten this to work with local accounts. Microsoft "Hello" does not appear as a sign-in option for my account settings, and the MS Live account is apparently tied to it. The login screen reports the fingerprints associated with that account as "not verified." A lot of folks on the Internet seem to be having this issue (Hello unavailable), so maybe a solution will appear. My test machine has multiple users and using the reader at login correctly identifies all the accounts, (even recognizes my "live account" fingerprint and highlights that account), but the rest of the login process only executes for the local accounts... Pin or password makes no difference - Company website is now "Crossmatch.com" You can search the site by filename below (leave off the .zip extension) to download. - Latest firrmware update remains DP00_02_004.zip, dated March 10, 2009 - Latest driver is 4.0.0.143 (DP00_02_008.zip), dated September 27, 2010 (Note that the older version 4.0.0.128 (DP00_02_003.zip), dated July 9, 2009 also works. - Last but not least, (with much thanks to Amazon reviewer* Derek P!) a compatible copy of the DigitalPersona Personal software can be found on the Hewlett-Packard support website! *Amazon has this device listed in multiple locations, and Derek reviewed one of the "other" ones, so I'm adding the information here. Don't try to enroll from the login screen. Good luck! ---------------- Original review ---------------- Pros: Build quality & design. Cons: No "out of box" functionality (details below). Bottom Line Up Front: I have two and both work like a charm on XP Pro 32 and 7 Ultimate x64, once I was able to locate and install the necessary driver and application. I have used U.are.U fingerprint readers on multiple systems since version 1.0 on Windows 98 (including the Microsoft-branded 2.0 version for XP) and have never found any flaws with the hardware. This model is by far the best built and looks/feels like it should last "forever." I upgraded to this model when I began planning to upgrade my operating system to Windows 7, as the Microsoft wizard informed me the old 2.0 reader would be incompatible with the new operating system. (Why didn't Microsoft support "their own" product? But I digress...) I initially successfully installed them with Windows XP Professional SP2 (32-bit) and am now running on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64-bit) with no issues other than procuring software. The product ships without drivers or application software, both of which are required before it will operate properly. Unlike some other reviewers' experiences, my Windows 7 system did not recognize the reader until I manually installed drivers. Note: If you are upgrading from an older fingerprint reader, be sure to uninstall any older application before installing the new drivers. For example, I had the DigitalPersona Password Manager for my 2.0 reader on the system. This application did not work with the 4500 reader and I ended up having to uninstall the new driver, uninstall the application, and re-install the driver. The driver is available from the DigitalPersona dot com website, albeit indirectly. A search for "u.are.u 4500 drivers" (I used Google) gave me the link. The most recent version is 4.0.0.128, the file name is DP00_02_03.zip published March 10, 2009. Simply unzip and run the executable, then reboot. This driver worked with both my XP and 7 configurations. The operating system recognized that I had the U.are.U 4500 attached, and placed a (at this point non-functioning) "fingerprint log on" icon on my welcome screen. Note: The latest firmware (search for "u.are.u 4500 firmware") is also available on the same website. It is Version 102, the file name is DP00_02_04.zip published July 9, 2009. Version 4.x application software is still required at this point to register your fingerprints and actually use the reader. The Digital Persona company used to offer a "Personal" version for retail consumers, but stopped supporting it on April 26th, 2010. They now focus exclusively on corporate/ enterprise/ OEM markets. They will sell the least expensive version of their "Pro Workgroup" software for about $35 per license at the time I write this. It offers a number of pretty awesome features, I recommend looking at it. They offer a free trial as well. For my limited purposes, it was overkill if a free option was available. Copies of the "Personal" software are still floating around the Internet. Of course it will not be supported by the Digital Persona company. The last version was 4.11, but the application includes an upgrade function that may make it possible to install an earlier 4.x version and then get to 4.11 anyway. There are both 32 and 64 bit versions of the "Personal" software, and they are NOT mutually compatible. There is also a version tailored for HP notebooks that may or may not work on other systems. On the XP system I successfully installed an HP 32-bit 4.01 which upgraded to 4.11. On the 64-bit system I initially tried an HP version that did not work, but after about an hour of searching I found a non-HP 4.11 64-bit install that works fine. Unfortunately I can't post links in this review, but the personal applications are still out there if you don't want the professional version and don't mind that they are no longer supported. April 2013 Update: I have not been able to get these to work with Windows 8 yet. The OS recognizes the hardware, but the "Personal" software does not work. I am waiting for a response from Digital Persona as to whether an affordable commercial application is available.

Den fungerar inte. Trotts väldigt många försök att läsa in mina fingrar, så "minns" den bara mina fingeravtryck i 1 dag. Sedan måste jag göra om inläsningen av fingret för att det skall fungera igen. Har provat den i flera veckor, har felsökt och installerat om den enligt tillverkarens anvisningar och alltid med tillverkarens drivrutiner, men det fungerar bara den första dagen. Sedan fungerar det inte. Har även provat med andra fingrar, samt även provat på en annan dator. Inget hjälper. Denna fingeravtrycksläsare är en stor besvikelse och alla pengar var bortkastade. Köp inte! Kommer aldrig rekommendera någon att använda denna produkt.

This is a Linux configurable Fingerprint sensor. Works with libfprint on many Linux distros. I tried Mint and Kubuntu. Both worked. Expensive but worth the price if you value FP signins. Device is feels solid. Some failure to read, but it seems that may be from it reading faster than some apps can react. I would recommend this device.
