Beauty & the Beast: A Pop-up Book of the Classic Fairy Tale

Robert Sabuta is the most imaginative and talented pop-up book artist on the planet! As an avid collector of Sabuta’s masterpiece pop-up books, I found this masterpiece of artistry and paper engineering sublime. And this book goes beyond many of his beautiful works of art in concentrating on an equally stunning retelling of the story that leans into Jean Cocteau’s storyline of his spectacular and surreal Beauty and the Beast film adaptation of Mme Leprince de Beaumont’s fairytale. In considering all aspects of this incredible book, I found it very touching and surprising. It completely exceeded my expectations and it is one of my favorites in my broad Sabuta book collection.

This book is beautiful! I bought it as a Christmas present for my granddaughter. She loves picking out things I. The popups. Wonderful keepsake book.

Great story. Gorgeous art work and elaborate pop-ups. Wish I’d discovered this pop-up book series years ago when the books were easier to obtain.

I bought my first Sabuda book (Alice in Wonderland) about 5 years ago and I have been in love with these books ever since. I now own several and my 5 year old daughter loves them just as much as I do. I pre-ordered this for Christmas and knew I didn't need to wait for a review to buy it. Just came in yesterday and bravo to Sabuda for making another masterpiece. There are some elements of other pop-ups we have come to know and love from his previous works, but also a few new elements. The beginning of the book has three accordian style pull-out view boxes you can look in to and actually see Beauty's father walking down mirrored halls in the beasts castle. Later on you open to Beauty and the Beast dining at a table right in the middle of the book. The final page has Beauty and the Beast in the middle of a magnificent rose garden with 3-D hedges and you lift a flap to transform the Beast to a prince. As if the stunning pop-ups aren't enough, I think the two other reasons I am so dedicated to his work is that he is so respectful of the original writings of the authors. This is the original store of Beauty and the Beast, not the Disney version. Secondly he has found a way to make pop-ups books worth reading. Pop-up books are notoriously light on the wording because the pop-ups required most of the space on the page. He has incorporated pages within the pages to make them worth seeing and worth reading! This is a great way to interest a young person in reading who otherwise might not like to read. This is a MUST HAVE for any lover of pop-ups like myself, or anyone who is in love with this tale of Beauty and the Beast!

The BEST pop up book on the planet. They offer different stories as well but my 4 year old granddaughter loves it

After enjoying my Robert Sabuda Pop-up version of Anderson's THE LITTLE MERMAID, I looked forward to my online purchase of Sabuda's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST! According to DailyDeal USA the book is in perfect condition so I expected the pop-ups to all work great like in his and Rhinehart's Encyclopedia Prehistorica MEGA-BEASTS pop-up book which I also bought from DailyDeal USA! But the beast's dining table with beauty did not pop-up well, the beast looked squashed down at his table and the hedges in the garden where the beast was dieing would not stand up on their own. But I have made pop-ups of my own years ago so I examined the pop-up table and the cardboard table leg was too short. So I cut a rectangular strip of white oaktag cardboard the same size as the table leg, folded it down the middle and after I cut through the white cardboard leg I glued the table leg sized cardboard to the table leg, making sure I raised the top part of the leg by a quarter of and inch thus making the leg longer. When I then tried to open up the pop-up again I still needed to lengthen the leg a little more and then when the glue dried I opened the pop-up table pages again holding the pages down and flat and the pop-up works just fine! Lengthening the leg caused the sitting beast to sit up straight and look well formed not squashed! And the top of the table looks even and neat with Beauty sitting over it! As for the lying down hedges I cut two small short strips of oaktag cardboard, put diagonal folds at the end of the strips and glued the ends of the strips to the inside of the rectangular hedges while the other ends with the diagonal folds are glued to the standing strubs so the cardboard bushes hold up the retangular hedges! I would like them to stand up better then they do but at least they don't lie flat when the pop-up pages are opened! I'm glad the streechable buildings on the beasts castle work just fine for looking into! Sabuda must have been thinking about the kaleidoscopes we baby boomers enjoyed as kids! The mirrors inside the retractable buildings act like mirrors in the house of mirrors in amusement parks! Remember the reflections multiplied seem to on forever!? And moving the tube buildings from side to side makes the reflections look like a twisting hallway that goes on forever! The close up of the beast's face looks like the most complex pop-up head yet! His eyelids open and close and the long ears go up and down! I may still do a little more adjusting repair but this book, like THE LITTLE MERMAID, has the stained glass look! Interesting to compare this with the Jean Cocteau BEAUTY AND THE BEAST restored remastered movie which I have on DVD!! I'd like to see a pop-up version of Shakespeare's MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM made by Subuda and Rhinehart in the same art style as their FAIRIES AND MAGICAL CREATURES Encyclopedia Mythologica Pop-up book!!! UPDATE: I discovered on Jan 11, 2014 that the BEAUTY AND THE BEAST pop- up book is a 2010 release so it was originally made 3 years before THE LITTLE MERMAID POP-UP BOOK that is a 2013 release. Nice to know Sabuda improved on his BEAUTY AND THE BEAST work and my LITTLE MERMAID pop-up has no manufacturing defects! I notice there are NO retangular 3D hedges that just lie flat in the LITTLE MERMAID pop-up book!

This book is absolutely magical the craftsmanship is other worldly I wish more books was like this my daughter and I absolutely love it it is beautiful and worth so much more.
