Simple and easily understood
Very basic, but informative for the beginner. The first section dealing with how and why plants grow underwater also included a visual, very helpful. Same with the plants. Temperatures, pictures, reprodction for each. Not long winded, very useful for getting an understanding of what it will require. I do wish it had included info on LED lighting with the others but, that is newer tech so understandable. Highly recommend for anyone getting started in aquatic plants. It even has recommendations for fish types based on plant :)

A small, well-laid out book with plenty of images
If you're looking for an easy book to follow on aquarium plants, this is the book for you. It's easy to read, has plenty of pictures and different varieties of similar common-name plants, and even shows how to properly set up and care for the plants in the beginning of the book. It's helpful to know what rocks you can use and that heating coils are apparently good for plants and mimic the sun's warming of the soil, even if you're not setting up your aquarium that way.I catch myself checking (and re-checking) the book whenever I have a question, and although it's not a giant encyclopedia it does contain some pretty comprehensive information. Would definitely recommend this to a friend or someone who needs a beginner's book on aquatic plants.

Excellent book for amateur and wannabe expert
This book is a great buy for the price. It has the most recent information (2005 edition), is nicely organized and formatted, and the illustrations and descriptors are very good. The sections on individual plants is very helpful with most popular plant types illustrated and described. I especially like the fact that the decriptions, while brief, are very to the point and provide essential information in a clear concise way (plant height, light and other requirements, overall ease of maintenance, growth rate, suggested placement in tank etc). Not as comprehensive in listing species as some other books, but more than enough for most avid aquarists (I have had aquaria and live plants for over 25 years!). If you buy only one book, make it this one!

Very useful book for choosing and growing aquarium plants
I really like this book. The book devotes several pages explaining the types of plants, how to separate and plant them, and other useful information before getting into the individual plants. The book is very user friendly and I think anyone, at any age can read the book with no problem. The pictures of each plant are excellent quality. I really found the book helpful and I will be referring to it as I choose plants for my tanks.

Nice reference
This little book let me go from a newbie to having a beautiful planted tank with healthy thriving plants. Lots of helpful info. I still refer to it from time to time even after a couple of years.

For a plant tank not a fish tank
I find the title containing the word encyclopedia a little deceiving. The back of the book describes the book a little better as "Wide-ranging selection of the most common plants". Though this book has many listings of aquarium plants I would not use this book to identify a plant because it is highly abridged. The advice on how to setup a planted tank is geared towards a plant only tank and would be atypical for a aquarium where the main focus is tropical fish. Maybe just me but I was looking for a book about having ornamental plants in my tropical fish tank. Still useful, Easy read, I would suggest this book to someone who doesn't know much about aquarium plants but wants to get a good foothold in the basics. Keep in mind that this book is about a plant tank not a fish tank.

Great book, very informational
My aquarium obsessed husband loved this is book. It makes searching for plants easier as you can simply flip through and look at photos versus guessing on the web. It's also full of information on each plant and the care they need.
