Hubbell Raco 8203 4" Square Box Extension

Use one of these when the box isn't deep enough for the wires and/or devices
Sometimes when adding wires for a new outlet or light to existing house wiring, you may find that the number of wires in a box exceeds the rated capacity of the box, or simply won't physically fit. To calculate the rated capacity, do a web search on "electrical box fill calculations".If it is a 4" box, then this extender is the solution: just set the box lid aside, then screw the extender on with the screws that previously held the lid. Now there should be enough room for the wires, so arrange them in the new larger space and install the lid on the extender.Occasionally you may come across a junction box which is missing its lid. Before installing a new lid, check to make sure that the box was rated for the number of wires it now contains (bearing in mind that all ground conductors are considered to be one single wire). If it wasn't, or the box just seems too crowded, then install one of these before adding a lid.
