Shelby Lee Adams: Salt & Truth

outstanding
Perhaps my personal relationship with the author has tainted my opinion, but I honestly do not think so. The narrative accompanying the photos is exceptionally well done and creates a background that completes the picture. An exceptionally well done photo-journalistic work.

Disappointed
While I am a big fan of Shelby Adams photograpgy, this particular book by far did not live up to what was expected.

Hard and Soft
I bought this as a gift for my husband who volunteered with the Appalachian Service Project for many summers. While at times controversial, we both feel Mr. Adams has captured a slice of life that is quickly disappearing.

Unique View of Rural Mountain Culture
Powerful imagery of an otherwise camera-shy people. Shelby Lee Adams was born in Appalachia andhas mutual trust and respect needed to develop such an archive.

FANTASTIC photos, not so great printing
I believe Shelby Lee Adams is one of the world's greatest photographers. The way he captures the people of the Appalachian region of the US is remarkable and brings them to life. Yes there is a sadness to the photos, but also a gritty realism. My only complaint with the book is the actual printing, I also have his "Appalachian Lives" and the printing on that book is superior to this one. Some of the photos in this seem to be printed with a muddy gray look, devoid of white that doesn't allow them to pop off the page. I received a new copy as a present, and was disappointed that it really doesn't seem to be high quality printing for a hardcover $60 book.

Shelby Lee Adams - Salt and Truth. The last of the Greats
This is a magnificant book and demonstrates the importance of Adams's work in the annals of photographic and social history. Shlby Lee Adams gets to the heart and core of the subjects in a manner that is rarely experienced today in the fast track world of throw away digitization. Take time and patience to unravel the beauty and honsty contained within this work. Highly recommended!
