Montalbano of old, with a few subtitle issues.
So, is this season of Montalbano any good?Well, yes, for the most part it is.It isn't, perhaps, as good as previous seasons, though it still feels like the Montalbano of old. It's rich, sumptuous viewing, with a mix of melancholy and comedy. There have been changes from past episodes - perhaps a little less of the Scicilian landscape say, few supporting characters - but by and large it's good. The first episode of this series is, in my opinion, the better of the two - it flows nicely, the story is good, and it's what you might expect from a Montalbano mystery. The second episode is weaker - significantly - though in many respects that is because the underlying stories are poor, lacking bite and not really pulled off well on tv (the book on which the second episode is based has the same dual story idea but isn't limited by tv budgets). The only real problem are the subtitles. In the first episode they are generally fine, though there are the odd lines of translation which don't really make any sense. The second episode is, however, not great. I'd say 70% of the translation is fine, 20% is what might best be called 'clunky' (which is to say it feels like someone has translated the text like-for-like from Italian to English, without thinking that there might be more appropriate phrasing to use etc), while the remaining 10% is just wrong in such a way that it changes the meaning of what's going on. You can work around it and it doesn't ruin the episode, but it's not brilliant and not up the standards of previous series. Perhaps issues in post-production?Overall, however, this is the same, excellent Montalbano.

Great series
Both my wife and I are big fans of "Monty" and love how the characters have developed over the series. This latest release takes the whole Montalbano thing to a new level, more depth and emotional content. For anyone who has not seen Montalbano before I suggest you start at the beginning - perhaps even to start with Young Montalbano (although not made before the main series, it is a good insight into the character and especially into his 'house by the sea') who shows from day one, that he is a force to be reckoned with.Although the series is all in Italian, the setting in the amazing Sicily is at times amazing - all those steps though would cripple me! The subtitles are adequate and allow the story to unfold quite well - although if you can speak Italian I am sure the series would go up even further.Characterwise, you love Montalbano, get annoyed and frustrated by Mimi, wonder why they employed Catarella (although without him it would lose something big) and will enjoy the food and drink that they all seem to love - apart from Fatsio who seems to live on fresh air.Any way, all the Montalbano series are worth getting as I am sure you will want to watch them again and again.

This is the same quality as all previous escapades of Monty and crew.
This cannot be stressed enough THE SUBTITLES ARE FINE. There is no issue with them. DO NOT listen to the naysayers on here. It's their eye sight or equipment at fault. The subtitles stay onscreen long enough to read. So that is debunked. The subtitles are the same size and font and colour as all previous Montalbano DVD's. So that is debunked. Any negative talk in reviews on here about subtitles needs to be ignored. It is safe to purchase this set.Season 10 arrived this morning from the fine folks who drive for Amazon's Delivery. In fact the gentleman was about 35 minutes earlier than the tracking stated he would be. 5 stars for that guy. The first thing I did when I got my package of DVD's was go straight to this Monty one. See what the fuss was about. I put the DVD into the machine and randomly skipped to several different sections of both movies. Watched for a minute or so each time. SUBTITLES ARE FINE. Same as always people. So ignore the negative reviews.I look forward to watching these new episodes of Monty and his posse of lads kicking ass and take down names.

Good stories & acting
Good stories and acting but in this collection the subtitles are rubbish. As an Italian graduate, I sat and winced at some of what came up on screen by way of translation. Way off the mark. Sometimes I can't follow the thickly Sicilian phrases, but mostly I have to translate for my husband. Could do much better.

Arrived promptly and safely packaged
Ordered this product as already have Collections 1-9. We've loved Montalbano since the very first episode and have enjoyed watching all the characters develop over the years. Mimi the philandering lover and husband, Fazio the mind of information, Catterrella the most clumsy, accident prone, and yet the most computer literate of policeman, and Montalbano himself who not only loves his job and food, but to the detriment of his long term partner Liva, who must have the patience of a saint to put up with him. Will they ever get married, who knows? We enjoyed Collection10, if you could call it a collection, as it only has two episodes. They really should have put Collection 9 and 10 together, but then it comes down to economics, the demand for the product and what they can get away with charging for it. Will they make any more episodes, I do hope so before the actors retire!

Excellent films with great backgrounds
Despite several reviews complaint about sub titles these are fine. Maybe not every word translated but that does not prove a problem. Two more stories in the list. Pity there are just a few left to come. Montalbano and his team are such warm characters and the setting makes me so envious.

excellent series
Another reviewer was right about the subtitles , they have got to be the worst of all 10 collections . But having said that the films were as good as usual and the only character/star to have aged after all these years is Caterella. I hope it's not the last one.
