Can the shaft direction be reversed on this so that it can be mounted behind a mounting plate instead of in front of it?

Surpass and Hobbyhh brand motors have the design you are looking for. Easiest way to tell is to look at the photos. If three motor wires are on OPPOSITE end from the long shaft (like this Flash Hobby D3548) it cannot be reversed. If the three motor wires are on the SAME end as the long shaft they can be reversed. (Like the Surpass or Hobbyhh.) Typically they come with an adapter that mounts on the end of the motor and has the appropriate size shaft for your prop.

What ESCs are compatible with this motor?

Depending on what battery and current drain minimum 30 amp brushless. With 4 cell battery minimum 40 amp. Great motor Have bought several.

Can you adjust the axial position of the shaft? If not, can you take apart the motor and put it back together?

I have taken a D2836 motor apart. There is an access screw to take the shaft out. You will need to warm the motor up with some heat. This 3548 has the same access screw. Good luck !

What is the prop adapter diameter? The prop shaft diameter?

The shaft size is 5.0 x 65.5mm. And the prop for 1100kv is suitable for 12x6/11x8 inch. 900kv is suitable for 13x7/12x7. 790kv is suiable for 13x8/12x6. You can according this to choose what you wnat
