Are these ok for outside?

Probably not for any length of time - unless they are REALLY in a covered area. They are constructed of wood (seat) and metal...seems like it would rot and/or rust pretty quickly as they don't seem treated for outdoor use at all.

How wide is the base?

Approximately 17" at the bottom. We love the stools. The wood seat is a little hard so we got the baibu Bar Stool Cushions in 14" size. Perfect fit.
