I believe it is a waxy substance such as bees wax, or the wax from a common plumbing part called a "toilet ring". The substance should slow-down the action of the shock absorber.... so GREASE would cause it to move too smoothly. I would try bees wax, or a 2 dollar WAX RING for a toilet flange. I repaired my own suspension rods using a simple procedure. I did 2 rods at a time. Remove 2 of them from the machine. Pry apart the little compartment. Remove the SPONGY thing that is inside. Then I tied 4 or 5 medium sized rubberbands in a row and wrapped them around the rod. Then simply push the "knot" of rubberbands into the place where the spongy thing came out. Snap it back together... or you could ADD some WAXY stuff as described above. THEN snap it back together. If you purchase NEW suspension rods, they will likely fail in 3 or 4 weeks also. The rubber band idea has fixed my machine for a couple months now. There are many videos on youtube about this problem.
