Yes and no... You can use any old USB 3.0 external hard drive to play backwards-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. You can even use any old USB 3.0 external hard drive to *STORE* new next-gen enhanced/optimized for Xbox Series X|S games. However, you can only PLAY the new next-gen enhanced/optimized Xbox Series X|S games from the system's internal storage or from one of these expensive Seagate storage expansion cards since they use the fancy new "Xbox Velocity Architecture" which requires this technology. i have serval series S/X games on my hard drive and still have room for more. i would say 5 - 10 games per 1TB easy. as for those who say games are not optimized they are getting optimized while file size are smaller for download when they uncompress or download the rest the file size gets bigger. welcome to 4k resolution textures. 360 and ps3 did not have this problem because back then a large game was a joke 1 - 7gigs. xbox one games are like 7 - 50gigs series X/S games are 15 - 100gigs. Blame the 4k textures and the 50 million HD audio/ Video files.
