Very strong retractable recoil. Needs to be installed to a secure or very sturdy surface
We placed these between to open hall entryways between the family room and kitchen, to keep our dog constrained in the kitchen when we are gone. We did not want to permanently attach the retainers/hooks to the walls, so we built 4x4 posts (1 for each side) with the components attached. Since the recoil is so strong, we cut 1x4 boards the width of the gap between posts (1 for top, 1 for bottom), and cut and attached some pieces of wood to make "slots" to hold the boards at each end. The slots need to hold the board ends very securely, or the recoil will still try to rotate the posts around the end of the boards. One side the slot tolerance was very tight and held the boards securely. For the other, drilled a couple holes through the slot retainers and the "shelf" board and insert pins to prevent it from being able to turn. These work well for our dog to make a visible barrier, as she is not likely to jump or push on it. However if a dog or child attempted they could easily push this structure over. For that situation, the gate retainers should be attached to a permanent structure, such as the walls.

Does what was expected.
Not quite as sturdy as I expected. But works well for what we need. Would purchase again.

easy to use
It's nice fully tucks out of the way and don't have a cumbersome gate to figure out where to put when not in use.

Easy to break the wire holding the mesh gate...
We've had this gate for a few weeks now, and it held up well until our dog decided to push through it. At this point, the flimsy wire holding the mesh on the side broke and it was a bear to fix. Took me an hour, but thought it was good as new, until the next morning when I saw that the wire holding the other side of the mesh gate broke, rendering it unusable. It might be good if you are just wanting to keep a tiny dog on the other side of it, or maybe a crawling baby but beware that the wire holding the mesh gate on either side is thin and flimsy and if pressed even a little bit, it will break, not good for keeping rambunctious toddlers or larger dogs confined to an area. I feel like this is something that could easily be foreseen, but well, for many people's purposes this gate could work, it just did not work for me.

Too many design flaws, just buy the traditional style metal gates
We bought two of these gates to secure large openings into our living room (>60"). Two of the walls we installed a gate on are not parallel to each other. The issues we encountered:1. The gates are really only designed for parallel or nearly parallel walls. Even if we had been able to install the gate correctly on the one entrance, it wouldn't have "latched" properly due to the odd angle and the fact that the latching mechanism is really only a hook holding the gate open.2. We would have been able to make the "latching" mechanism work if it had been designed to hook onto the door from both sides, but here we encountered another problem due to bad design. Our walls have baseboards, which doesn't inherently craft a problem except that the extension brackets only allow for the latch hook to be installed one way, which meant the we couldn't just flip the latch hook around to accommodate our non-parallel walls. We tried working around this design flaw but ultimately realized that we wouldn't be able to install the gate properly by attaching it to the baseboard. If we had installed the gate above the baseboard, it would leave a 6" gap between the gate and the floor which in no way would have deterred our 10 month old from crawling under.3. The retractable design, in my opinion, is good only in theory. The problem for us was that the tension is just too slack. Even with proper installation, with no gap at the bottom, our daughter would have been able to squeeze under the gate just by lifting up from the bottom, even with the lock function. In the end we returned both gates and bought the traditional metal style gates, which are much sturdier.

Sturdy!
I'm so glad I got rid of the traditional metal gate and did this for our kitchen opening. We have had this gate for a couple of months now and it's stood up to 3 dogs which are 2 Boston terriers and a 2 year old golden retriever. It's so nice to have it there when needed and not there and out of the way when not needed. It makes the opening look much more clean. It's easy to close and open. So easy my small for her age 6 year old can do it with very little trouble. I'm very satisfied with this retractable gate and am glad I made the jump to do it. I will say that if you do have a young one they might figure out to crawl under it. It is a lot better if you lock it into place and mount it low to the floor.

I love that it’s retractable!
We bought it for one of the rooms at the church to block an area the kids are not supposed to go into but the teachers need to go in frequently. So unfortunately my husband installed it a hair too high and the strong willed children figured out that they can still wiggle their way underneath it! So the plastic fabric part is not as firm as the hardwood and plastic gates. So make sure you install it low to the ground to prevent having to move it because it’s not super quick to install. Other than that I really like it!!
