SYRYN has a customer for life if they keep this up!
I have been a regular lap swimmer for over 15 years (also a former US Navy service member). At a minimum I am in the pool twice a week for 35 laps or more. Prior to purchasing the SYRYN, I had a first generation NuDolphin (purchased around 2005) that up and died on me a month and some ago, so I am no stranger to waterproof mp3 and what to expect from them. SYRYN and Swimbuds have both far exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is as optimal as I could hope, and is hugely exceptional for the cost. The instruction booklet was very clear and concise and easy to follow. I use Amazon Music as my go-to after ditching iTunes some years ago (very long story), and every song I have ever purchased through Amazon was very easy to transfer over to my Music folder on my computer (download the desktop Amazon Music app to make it super easy), then it was just drag and drop into the folder for the SYRYN. The device itself is even lighter than my NuDolphin was, and I like that the clip is wide, long, but lies very close to the device. I hook-slide it onto my swim cap and it doesn't budge! The ear buds are phenomenal. They keep all the water out of my ears and keep the sound quality clear and true through flip turns and depths up to 10ft (that's as deep as our pool is). As to the other reviews, I'm not sure why they've had such a hard time with the functions, especially since it's spelled out so easily in the booklet (like, 5th grader would say "duh"). To shuffle songs, simply press and hold the forward and reverse buttons simultaneously until the light indicator switches from red to purple/blue back to red again. To turn off shuffle, repeat. Volume: Press and hold the up/down button (co-located with the reverse/forward buttons... up and reverse, down and forward... up and down are in relation to the audio jack placement) until you achieve the desired sound level. Play/pause: self explanatory Turn on/off: press and hold the play/pause button until the indicator light turns on or off. Seriously, you cannot beat this player for the simplicity, functionality, quality of sound, craftsmanship, etc. I'm definitely glad I went with this player instead of the Diver or the costlier options. Plus, the company who stocks this is a home-run, family-run business. And no, I got absolutely nothing in return for this review.

Pool must have!
First off, this is my second Syryn - I purchased the first one in 2018 - after six years of religious use it finally bit the dust. To me that speaks volumes about the quality of the device. I initially made a switch to another waterproof mp3 player that didn't even seem to work out of the box and was returned. I then came back to my trusty Syryn. I hope that quality continues in the current generation. After the first use with the newest model, it seems everything I loved about the device is still there with some improvements. Given that I'm a pro with adding music, loading all my songs from the old device was easy (and adding new music is easy as well). In the pool, it clipped just as securely to my cap. The included headphones appear to have improved over the version that previously included - we'll see how long they hold up. The headphones from six years ago lasted a few uses before one ear would stop working so I quickly purchased a better pair. The current headphones were more comfortable and had great sound so it'll be great if they hold up. The buttons on the device are just as simple - no frills - although it now tells you if it is on or not. The buttons do wear over time but even after six years the buttons were pretty responsive right up until it wouldn't turn on. All in all this is a great little device if you enjoy have music while swimming laps or just playing in the pool. I look forward to my swim sessions again now that I have a functioning music player (I went a few sessions with the old device stopping mid session or just not turning on before I bit the bullet and replaced it).

WARNING: HEADPHONE JACK CAN DAMAGE HEADPHONES
First of all, I used this MP3 player for about 4 years now. Served its purpose well, which was to put sound in my ears while swimming. Or so I thought. Fast forward to about a year ago, I started using it for regular gym routines, with a pair of my favorite IEMs (which I had been using with 0 issues for 3+ years). Some day after swimming with it, I turned it on and hear a "FZZT" sound - not good. Turns out my L drive for the ear monitor just went almost mute. Okay, I figure, it's been a while exercising with it, surely it was due to sweat damage. Fast forward two or so weeks, I plug in a new pair of IEMs, "FZZZT" - another L ear drive shot, and now I'm down another pair of headphones. At this point, I'm suspicious. Is it truly safe to share the same headphone jack for audio, charging, and file transfer, while using that same headphone port with direct water contact? As it turns out, maybe not. To put it bluntly, I lost two pairs of $50 IEMs (in-ear monitors) on this MP3 player. Fool that I am, I figure, surely this is an old issue with the original version of SYRYN, the one I owned. I emailed the team, thinking hey, maybe they can compensate or explain or assist, instead I am rebuffed immediately and told to contact the headphone company. Yeah, no, their headphones are made flawlessly and I've been using them for well over a decade. Regardless, it's an issue that can only arise from a shorted conductor on the AUX port/headphone jack. Meanwhile, a new SYRYN arrives, as I really loved the product up until then, as I said, very good for sound underwater. Except this one ALSO breaks a THIRD pair's driver, this time on the R headphone, thankfully right away so I am now returning it. I go to my local electrician to check, and lo and behold, confirmation: both the original and newer version have an issue where water contact in the AUX port can SHORT the headphones. And then I remember, that I had to go through 3 pairs of swimming headphones while using my original SYRYN. I had always thought, oh one of the headphones went out because of water getting in, no big deal. No - it was the device itself SHORTING the headphones, every single time. So, is SYRYN good? Yeah, if you want sound underwater - **in only one ear**. Almost guaranteed you will do as I did and damage the headphones, because the only way to avoid it would be to wipe clean the aux port every time prior to use, then power on while headphones are NOT in, and then attach headphones - instructions that do not appear ANYWHERE on the manual, troubleshooting, or pamphlet the device comes with. And yet I'm pretty sure the company is well aware of this issue, as it seems to be a design flaw. TL;DR IF YOU HAVE HEADPHONES YOU CARE ABOUT, DO NOT USE SYRYN WITH THEM. THEY WILL LIKELY SHORT/BREAK/FAIL IN ONE EAR DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE HEADPHONE JACK. YOU WILL LIKELY NEED NEW PAIRS OF SWIMMING HEADPHONES AT SOME POINT, TOO, SINCE THEY ARE BOUND TO BE DAMAGED FROM REGULAR USE WITH THIS MP3 PLAYER. So there you have it. I'm incredibly disappointed, because like I said, I loved it when it worked. But that love has cost me way more money in headphones than the SYRYN costs, and it already costs enough. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Time to find another swimming MP3 player, I guess.

3rd UPDATE 2020-4th swimbud purchase: here's why
Updating 6/2020 According to Amazon, I've now purchased four of these, the most recent one arrived yesterday. Some background: I purchased my first one in 2016. I had tired of spending (at the time 3x for the Finis bone-transmitting version -- twice, and both lasting about a year. I purchased my second one to keep at a friend's home in 2017 where we spend quality time in summers. It'll turn up, eventually. I purchased the third one as as a gift for that friend; he too had bad experiences with the Finis. So I was left with the original Syryn from 2016. This season, the on/off function started getting dodgy; the battery seemed to hold maybe two hours (two or three pool sessions) worth of charge before dying. Charging became erratic. When I managed to turn it on, it worked well. But then I'd have trouble turning it off. Time to upgrade... I still was intrigued by the bone-transmitting technology because it was soooo much more convenient that inserting the ear buds (see below). I tried the Tayogo version for $20 more, but the sound was muffled and the FM feature never worked. I returned it. So now I'm back to the Syryn. I was delighted at one improvement: When you press the center button to turn on or turn off the unit, a voice comes on and says "unit on" or "unit off". This is great because the unit is usually attached to the back of your goggles. Before the only way to tell if the unit was "on" or "off" (as opposed to "pause") was the pinprick of a blue led light -- very challenging in a bright environment. The instructions also say the unit shuts itself off after three minutes on pause. I don't remember having that feature in earlier models. Physically, it is about a third smaller than the 2016 version, with the on/off/pause function button in the middle, as opposed to one end. Like last year's, this one can be rotated on a ratcheted base. Most important, the sound is very good. You still have to get the knack of inserting the earbuds to avoid flooding the ear, but once you do, it almost becomes second nature. Updating 5/2017 After using this for many months in an indoor pool, 2-3 times a week, thought it might be useful to update my experience. This has operated flawlessly and has become part of my swimming routine. Aside from taking an extra 45 seconds to place the earbuds correctly, as described below, I have no complaints or issues. UPDATED 12-17-2016 I'm updated and upgrading (from 3 to 4 stars) my earlier review after receiving input from the manufacturer to my earlier, critical review (below). Basically, they suggested I insert the ear buds this way: with your right hand, reach over your head and pull up the left ear, as if you were trying to meld it into a Spock ear, while inserting the ear bud into the canal. Do the same with the left arm pulling the right ear upward, inserting the ear bud into that ear at the same time. They said this would yield a tighter fit. It worked! I still dab a bit of vaseline to help with the seal. I've tried now on three 30-45 lap swims and no water has infiltrated into the ear, which previously caused the sound to deaden. If you read my original post below, you'll know I compared this to the much more expensive Finis Polaris, which was the second Finis music player to die just past the warranty date. The Finis technology of flat panels vibrating against the bone on the side of the ear is infinitely less complicated than inserting ear buds in the way described above. But the sound of the music -- I listen to everything from Classic to blues to rock -- sounds much, much better with these Swimbuds. Still, I'd sacrifice the difference in fidelity for the simplicity of the Finis style...but to spend north of $100 for a product that breaks in about 1 year? Not me. I really wanted to like these more. I bought them to replace Finish Polaris, which died after about 1 year, just past warranty (apparently no longer offered by Finish, at least not on its website). That was my second Finis -- I had an earlier generation that also lasted about a year. At those prices $100+ -- it should last much longer. So I searched and purchased these as replacements. I swim crawl exclusively. I swim several times a week and became, if not addicted, then dependent on music while I do my laps. The problem is, no matter which the ear buds size I tried (and they include 4 different sizes), water always leaked in and caused the music to be muffled. Or the music would "come on" on one side of my head whenever it lifted from the water, and become muffled when submerged. I tried dabbing the buds with vaseline, as recommend in the instruction manual. No luck. So instead of the music distracting and soothing me while I swim, the interruptions and unevenness of the sound distracted me. Not nice. The one thing the Finis did well was transmit music nicely through their bone conductive panels. May not have sounded as pristine as with earbuds, but the sound was even and steady. My wife, who swims breaststroke and never submerges her head, is now using these and likes them.

Surprisingly good, and still going strong after more than a year
EDIT5:18 months old and finally starting to have issues. The buttons are becoming unresponsive to presses, it is pretty much hit or miss at this point if it will turn off, or on, or adjust volume, etc. Once on it does work fine, and the audio is just as good as day one. Battery still lasts a week easily, and drag and drop simplicity on file transfers. I have picked up a different MP3 player to try and it has a pretty high bar to get over with the way my Syryn has worked. I would still recommend this item to someone looking for an MP3 player for swimming with out reservation. EDIT4: Nearly 18 months with hardly any issues. Still get 10+ hours out of a charge (I have actually never ran it to dead battery, just charge once a week because it fit my schedule). The buttons are definitely starting to get a bit more finicky, sometimes they require a bit more force than I would like to use. They do still work so I haven't resorted to replacing the unit yet, although that is likely coming before the 2 year mark. However, for the price, nearly 2 years of almost daily usage in the pool is by my reckoning a very good value! I do think they could improve the product with more robust controls, but I still recommend them to my lap partners. END EDIT4 EDIT3: Nearly a year later and the Syren MP3 player is still holding it's own. Still only needs a weekly recharge and gets through 10+ hours in the pool. I have noticed that turning the unit on/off and adjusting the volume is starting to get a bit finicky. The switches don't always register when clicked, but it hasn't gotten bad enough yet for me to ditch the unit. I always unplug the earbuds and rinse and dry the connector, which really helps keep the corrosion down. The earbuds are starting to show their age as the rubber piece is starting to regularly pull off the earbud, leaving the rubber piece in my ear. Very inconvenient, but a little spot of superglue on each bud solved that issue. As they are nearly a year old with almost daily usage, I think they are doing pretty well, but probably will need to be replaced after a year. As for the buttons not always working, not sure if that can be fixed, but for the price of a new unit when it quits working I will probably just buy a new one. This has been easily one of the best aquatics purchases I have made and I recommend them if you are looking for a good lap swimming MP3 player. END EDIT3 EDIT2: After 6 months of daily usage the Syren MP3 player is still going strong. I charge it once a week and it's good for a weeks worth of training sessions (about 10 hours). They can keep the cheap goggles, but the player is worth every penny for me. END EDIT2. EDIT: The headsets that came with the player are touted (Swim buds) as the best water sports buds available. Well, after 2 weeks I was only getting audio from one ear. Check with another set of buds and it wasn't the player. In fact after 3 months of nearly daily swimming, the player has performed flawlessly. I contacted Amazon, and was a little put off that they wanted to replace the swim buds with another brand, AGPTEK SE11 IPX8 Waterproof In-Ear Earphones, Coiled Swimming Earbuds. They rebated part of the cost when I protested, but I finally gave in. The new buds arrived a few days later, and have been perfect ever since! Honestly, they sound better than the Swimbuds did, and the fit is better for my ears. The coiled cord is genius. With the Swimbuds you have to wrap the extra cord up but with these AGPTek ones, you just stretch them out, tuck under your goggle strap, and go. As with the Swimbuds, you need to use some FitGoo to get a good water tight seal. I have also found that f=after each swim you should unplug the buds from the player and clean the plug. At first I just left them plugged in and after a couple weeks the sound was getting weak. Pulled the plug out and noticed that it looked a little corroded. Cleaned with a little alcohol and a scrub pad and back in business. The player has never given me a problem with the buttons. Only problem now is I can't imagine having to swim without them! And bonus if you swim at a crowded pull with a bunch of talkative swimmers, you can't hear them and when they see you rocking out they quit trying to bother you! End EDIT Was a little hesitant at first after reading mixed reviews. I was an age group/HS/college swimmer and now masters with about 45 years of competitive swimming background. Was worried that without wearing a cap these wouldn't make it through a full workout with sprints, multiple strokes, and flip turns. But all those years of singing the last song you heard before hitting the pool finally got the better of me. The goggles are nothing special, just a generic Speedo/Arena/Tyr knockoff, but are comfortable enough for 2 hour pool sessions and definitely more comfortable than my old swedes. The first thing to keep in mind is to follow the recommendation to run the cords under the strap, it makes a difference. The second is that fit is everything. You need the largest earbud adapters that comfortable fit. Too small and they leak which ends up in no audio. Too large and they tend to work their way out. Once you determine which size buds to use make sure you use the fit goo (or vaseline/petroleum jelly) on the buds prior to inserting them. It helps to seal them in and keep the water out. Once the fit has been figured out then it's on to actually using them. I found that they weren't even noticeable attached to the back of my goggles (no cap). Operation of the unit is simplistic which is exactly what I want in a pool accessory. Contrary to what most reviews state, you don't need to pull just audio files to the device. You can pull folders of audio files and it will play them, but does so in alphabetical order by default. If you set it to shuffle mode it will play audio files in random order from multiple folders. After a week's worth of training sessions (1-1.5 hours each) I had to recharge, which works out to about 7 hours of play time. I will update this review after a month, but for now I would say if you are looking to get out of your head in the pool, do it!

Decent product but don't expect it to last more than one year
I owned 6 of these devices, including two replacement devices, over 2.5 years. This is a decent under $100 device for swimming if you prefer earbuds. The sound quality is good, feature-set and UX are good, the device is compact and easy to both carry around and clip, the battery last for about 8 hour of use (which is pretty good). But it has persistent quality problems which make it a short-term buy and the company isn't addressing them. I swim about 4 hours per week. All of the devices I had died within 9-15 months. The device works fine for the first few months, then starts having charing issues about 6 months in. They do tell you that the charging mechanism is fragile and you have to make sure the device is dry before charging and not overcharge (as a rule of thumb it takes about 2 hours to fully charge it and anything longer than this can lead to issues). But even if you follow all these instructions carefully, the charging mechanism still start going haywire... You'll start fearing charging it, will keep switching different chargers, tring to wiggle in your chargers, having to reinsert the charger multiple times because the device thinks it's actually your earphones (charging is done via the same 3.5mm port), etc. Ultimately the charging will just stop and your device will be useless. If this happens within a year of purchase, the company will send you another device (you have to. contact them directly). The customer service process is relatively painless although you have to pay for shipping broken devices. Your 1-year guarantee doesn't get extended to the replacement devices. Replacement devices arrive without packaging and in my experience lasted a lot less... I suspect you're getting back refurbished devices. Note that replacement for earbuds is separate. Earbuds last a little longer, more like 15 months. They can also be replaced within a year if broken. Afterwards, the company sells them at over $50 a pair so you may as well buy a replacement device for $30 more. It's way to high of a price point for an accessory. All-in-all: decent device but don't expect it to last. It's a early license really. Save yourself some grief and send it for a replacement once the problem start within the year from purchase and don't wait until the device dies completely.

Definitely worth the price
I was asked to write this review twice by the owners of the company so I wanted to start out as an apology to them for this delayed review and for possible buyers; just by this little detail you can see how much they care about their customers. I didn't write a review because I didn't get the chance to use this product until last week. I'm originally from Turkey so I went back to our summerhouse to try this bad boy in the sea - and boy did it deliver! I wasn't even sure if I should be using this in the sea or not but it seems to be working perfectly still. First of all, don't worry about the earbuds. They are comfortable and the cords don't get into your way at all while swimming. I didn't try to long corded ones but for the short one, you can just stick it to your swimming goggles and they won't cause you any trouble. All the functionality this device provides come from three buttons and they are very easy to use while swimming. I had no trouble switching from shuffle mode to normal mode, increase/decrease the volume, start/stop the song etc. Also, it fit perfectly on my goggles as well and never came out. Device lasts long so you don't need to recharge it a lot like other waterproof MP3 players out there. I usually charge it once in three days and I never ran out of battery before. Managing your songs is pretty straightforward as well: no extra software or effort to put songs into this beautiful mermaid - just drag&drop your songs into it and you're done. I've been using this product for 1.5 weeks now so I can't say whether its gonna be smooth sailing or not but I definitely suggest this product if you're in need of something to spice up your little under the sea time. P.S.: The theme song (Under the sea) from The Little Mermaid is actually quite fun to listen while swimming :)

Avoid the newer model
Well, I had to buy another one (my review for the first is below and I gave that a 4-star, which I changed to a 5-star rating). But the new one gets a 1-star. I bought it--and again--had to return it ($10 shipping charge on my part). The replacement worked fine but there are issues with it. I sometimes can't turn it on or off. I have to press the buttons over and over, and forget about the shuffle mode. Apparently there are a few songs that the player likes to repeat. Now I'm having problems with the headphones and the buds. I guess I can send it back (and pay another $10 in shipping), but I honestly don't believe I will get a quality product. See my earlier review below. It's been about a month and the replacement unit has worked fine. I use it three times a week for about 75 minutes. The swim buds work really well. All in all, for the price, this is a great deal: quality sound, easy to use, sturdy swim buds, and a reasonable price (with a 1-year warranty. And great customer service. So I"m upping my rating from 4 stars to 5. I'm giving it 4 stars for now, but I plan to update that in a month or so simply because it's too early to tell. This is my 3rd of these types of mp3 players. I first went with the FINIS brand and for the price, I would not advise anyone to get that. Then I went with the ARENA brand and that didn't last very long--so again, I advise against that one too. But let me relate my experience so far with Swimbuds. First, it is very, very easy to use (unlike Arena). However, it only lasted about 40 minutes during the first use, BUT after calling customer service, they agreed to replace the unit free of charge (just shipping on my part). They even expedited the shipping on their end so I mailed out the defective one on a Friday and the replacement was delivered on Monday. (Now that's real customer service unlike what I received with Arena and FINIS). Since then, I've used it 3 times, each time for about 75 minutes. No problems as of now, and all in all, given its decent sound quality, ease of use, and price, if I get a full year out of this device, then it's clearly a 5 star item in my book.
