This would be great for someone starting out, or someone who lost custody of half of their kitchen equipment or if you are just replacing or expanding. I chose this set because it included essentials. The slotted spoon will allow you to gather foods when you don't want the liquid and yet it will protect your non stick surfaces from scratches. The square edged spatula like tool will allow you to use as a spatula and flip foods as well as use as the perfect tool to scrape the "fond" (flavor bits) when you are deglazing, chef. The spoon is perfect for stirring and tasting any concoction. These have held up well so far. They wash well by hand. Of course, I don't put in the dishwasher~~that would be crazy. They are sturdy and feel good in the hand and are an appropriate size--not too big or too small. They fit in my drawers easily as well as my utensil vase. OXO makes really good stuff in general. I have had good luck with everything I have purchased many items from them so I trust the company and the designs seem like they are well thought out by people who actually cook. Good luck!
