Creative Reading Studies for Saxophone (Workshop Berklee Press)

I had one even before going to Berklee, used it during my Berklee days, gave it as a gift, and now, purchased again for myself and my students because it is just plain awesome.Such an innovative approach in improving your skill as a musician who wants to better their reading, technique, writing, arranging, and composing.

There are very few books of value when it comes to honing sight reading skills that stimulates a student instrumentalist's imagination in private practice. Creative Reading Studies for Saxophone however, is a completely new and fresh approach to developing one of the most important attributes in producing music at sight, not just on the saxophone but all instruments. It starts by encouraging the student to multi-task by reading given notes on suggested musical times, ie. quavers, crotchets etc. Thus, concentrating the mind in a far more concise way than just attempting to read etudes or individual parts. Even after many years of playing, I myself use this innovative book from time to time to regenerate my sight reading after periods of playing already rehearsed parts.

Very good when working on sight reading

These exercises really push your reading skills. The first section presents an ingenious method for internalizing written rhythmic patterns and the second section part presents challenging examples of modern writing. It's jazz oriented but the skills you develop apply to any written music. My sight-reading skills have improved and I've really just scratched the surface. If you aren't a great reader I recommend being very patient and take tempos far slower than indicated. Better to play it right than fast and wrong. Much of it is complex enough that the "memorizing" trap won't apply when you get more up to speed.

This is a great book for anyone trying to improve their sight reading. My only qualm is that there are a few mistakes in some of the rhythms. This doesn't take much away from the overall educational value of the book. I would highly recommend it.

Loads of exercises and etudes to build some very serious chops here. This book includes different time signatures, Quintuplets, septuplets and more, many different rhythms and phrasing ideas, some altissimo passages. If you're looking for some contemporary sounding reading material, this is one of the better books available. It more or less follows on where Volume 3 left off.
