No, these are actual t-shirts, not under shirt (wife-beater) type material. Very comfy to wear as a standalone or (like me) as an under shirt. As far as the clingy goes, I guess that would depend on your body and the size you got. There is not really any size difference than a normal t-shirt, so pick the normal range you would get.

I'm 5'6 and want the shirt to go just above my knees, which size would fit?

I am 6'2 and I ordered 4xl. The shirt fits like a 3x and is about 4 or 5 inches above the knee. The shirt Will shrink some after wash. Just bought the shirt a few weeks back. Hope this helps.
