Peticure Power pet nail trimmer
My 2 year old Peticure power unit died after two years and so I bought this one today and love that it is only $9 now! It is good except that it leaves rough edges even on low power so I have two different brands of nail grinders - Peticure and Dremel rechargable - for the following reasons: I have had the Dremel for a year and power is good for a big dog's nails but I wish it had a dust guard like Peticure does - I have both. I use Peticure (the powered one you plug in because it has good power and is fast - reviewers said not to waste your money on the battery operated ones and so I didn't) to catch the big filings because I don't like to breath nail dust or use safety glasses because of the nail flakes shooting off at me in various directions which is what you get from the Dremel or any nail grinder without a guard. Breathing nail dust can be dangerous to your lungs over time. In additon, I also like a guard because it is easier to keep your pet's hair out of the way so it doesn't get pulled when it accidently gets caught by the rotation - like it does in the Dremel. But with Peticure I haven't had this happen yet. A dog can get afraid of the grinder noise all over again when their hair gets accidently pulled like it does in the Dremel brand and I try to be careful but sometimes it just happens. However, Dremel exceeds Peticure in one way -->Because peticure leaves rough nail edges, even on low speed, I then use the Dremel on low speed to smooth the nails down so they are not sharp and don't catch on anything. Unfortunately the Peticure died after two years and so I had to use the Dremel for the whole nail job today. Worked well with great power for a recharge unit on a big dog and the only problem was the nail dust in the air and on the floor during and after use. I ordered another Peticure just so I could have a grinder with a guard again, but will keep the Dremel for the finishing and smoothing since that is what Peticure is not good at but Dremel is (not much nail dust if just finishing and smoothing). Also, this is better than manual nail clippers if you are afraid of getting the quick.... but you just need to know when to stop. A dog figiting when you get near but haven't cut it has told me on a few occasions that I was getting too close. SO if dog is used to grinder, stop before figiting starts, or at fiditing if you have gone a bit too close. Also, like others indicate, take time to get pet used to the grinder and give lots of treats and praise. After getting used to the noise, I then gave my big dog a treat for each toe. Thereafter, I just needed to turn it on and off and she would hear the sound and come running for her treats. I still give treats but not for every toe now. Would highly recommend the Dremel and they would get 5 stars if they had a guard on the unit; I recommend the Peticure for the power and speed it has, as well as the guard but it gets 4 stars because it leaves rough nail edges and so you still need to smooth them out with something else. One last thing - be careful to not grind too long as nail can start warming and get uncomfortable for the dog. I have only done this a few times, but again figiting told me to stop when I went too long. Some may think - "What? Only 2 years of use before it breaks?" I have had 4 pet nail ginding units so far and that is pretty normal and a good life span - so expect to buy a new one every two years but it is well worth it since nail trims costs $5-$10 each time and you are less likely to hit the quick and my dogs don't hate it as much as manual trimmers - so much easier on both of us.

It could be better
I thought it would have a lot of power but it wanted to quit on me after 2 paws. It still finished but not full power. I had the battery operated one for years and thought I would try this route since it could stay plugged in while trimming. I hated the battery operated one b/c the battery never stayed fully charged but this trimmer wants to back off some power when doing the pets nails. I have 2 boxers so it has to have enough power to trim. The trimmer didn't like doing such thick nails even w/ the correct attachment on it for thick nails. It sure beats $7/per dog or so to get the dogs nails trimmed at the vet and dealing w/ getting them there & time but the product could still be MUCH BETTER THAN IT IS. The $ is worth it if you look at it like that but it's frustrating.

Try it!
I had the battery charged one until it died. We had to milk it along the whole time with the speed varying. When it came time to order a new one, I gave this a try and couldn't believe how much of an improvement it was. It has a whole lot more power and the speed stays the same the whole time. Don't be concerned that the cord will get in the way because it's nice and long. As for those who are afraid to apply it to one nail too long, the answer is simple, alternate nails. You can go back to the previous nail after it cools, so there is no reason why you couldn't grind the nails down as far as you wish in a relatively short amount of time and in one session. My dog has very thick nails and it does great. I prefer to grind them more often that to take the chance of them being ground too short and by often I mean not more often than every few weeks. If you take the time to properly introduce your dog to the unit your dog will take to it just fine or even, like mine, look forward to it, because he knows rewards are involved. There is a trick to getting the ring to stay in place because it doesn't came that way, but I don't remember exactly what we did. Try pulling the ring out and use the tool to tighten into place. The catch cup doesn't do us much good since I usuallly forget to empty it and it dumps out onto the foor anyway. Still its not much to clean up. I thought it protected against over grinding, but the instructions say "not so". Since I have never cut them too short I guess I wouldn't need it next time. When I ordered I would only considered grinders that had the "protector cup".Have fun!

Good idea, bad construction
This is a great idea. Makes keeping up with my pup's nails more stress free. I jumped on the bandwagon a few years ago and bought the Peticure Elite. After two batteries replacements, I wanted to get the Peticure Power version so I could just plug it in. After I received the product I was excited to use it. I was tentative after the first use as the power going to the tool seemed inconsistent causing the motor to increase and decrease in speed periodically through the session. Giving it the benefit of the doubt I though it just needed to be "worn in." It's been 60 days and 4 uses later, and the product is getting worse. The speed of the motor still changes speed randomly, the smell of burning motor was still very strong, after tightening all the parts the drum piece kept slipping when being used. At times it seems to lose power and my pup's nail would get stuck slowing the motor down and freaking her out. Unfortunately I was outside the 30 day window from Amazon, there is no manufacturer warranty, and contact information for Peticure is absolutely nonexistent. I've just wasted money on this product, it certainly did not keep my loyalty.
