I read in the reviews, that the base is solid, but the coasters are printed Cardboard?Nope, the coasters are solid ceramic, with a printed top.So yes, a quick coat of varnish / glaze, laquer or similar will certainly be useful to stop spillages b coming permanent, but I always have a can of varnish about so was a matter of seconds to coat the top, let it sit for 24 hours then ready for tea / coffe /juice spillages.I use spray one coat clear yacht varnish for most things, it comes in gloss or matte, and has a fairly good heat resistance ( used it to varnish some Moroccan tile trivets), is waterproof, and is UV resistant ( I e. Sitting in the sunlight isn't going to make it crackle, crumble or go foggy) and you can buy a can here on Amazon.Also....the packaging is such, that you could, if you are careful, take the coasters out, varnish them , leave to dry for at least 24 hours, and pop them back in, and give them as a gift, if you don't think the recipient can bothered or is too young to carry out this simple task.Easy.Just saying,5 minutes spraying one coat, do nothing for 24 hours, and voila, save damaging a lovely item.I am not sure why the manufacturer doesn't do this but it really isn't such a faff to do it yourself.The base, is as others have said, remarkably well done, I really wasn't thinking it would be this good at this price.I just needed some more coasters for visiting friends to use, they all descend in droves, but am pleasantly surprised.The coasters sit neatly in the dragon, but have enough room so your are not struggling to get them out.The coasters are weighty, as they are thick ceramic, which I am doubly pleased about because that should heat shield my table.Overall a jolly good set, that is sure to please a dragon lover.

4 stars due to a printed coaster otherwise would have been 5! As I read before purchasing them it’s only a print! Which is disappointing as the dragon coaster holder is beautiful heavy and solid - worth the money without the coasters! Problem solved - I sprayed 2 coats of clear sealant on top and they are now perfect ! I would suggest anyone who buys them do the same to protect them fully from cold drink drips and hot drink rings. Such a shame the manufacturer left this detail out. Though I would still buy again and seal if buying for a gift.

I love this, the dragon cast is awesome. The only disappointment I have is that the coasters in the advertised images look metallic, but in fact it’s a paper print onto a thick cardboard base, which was a bit of a letdown.

When I received this I have to say from the start that it looks excellent and it really is an attractive piece. The actual coasters are, to my mind, a little small - nice for wine glasses but too small for a coffee mug.HOWEVER my biggest problem was the quality. My initial delivery was broken inside where the coasters sit. I returned it and asked for a replacement. This was promptly delivered and broken in EXACTLY the same place inside as the original order suggesting this is an inherent problem - I didn't ask for a second replacement but I did get a swift refund from Amazon.Nice item but with the too small actual coasters and the obvious lack of quality control something I would suggest you need to be wary of.

Brought as a birthday gift for one of my best friends for his birthday. I wanted to get him a dragon gift that would also be useful to have a purpose behind it as he likes his cups of tea. The item is quite heavy and comes in a bit if a bigger box but is a perfect size to use as a decorative but functional piece in a lounge, office or bedroom
