The first edition did of course not cover IPv6 as it was published years before the spec was. Now, it goes into great depth on IPv6 and explains it very well. The book still retains Stevens excellent writing style. It is concise, clear and gets to the point quickly. It is filled with examples using either tcpdump or wireshark screen captures, or good illustrations explaining the header structures. The book is over 1000 pages but not wordy, very impressive. Each chapter explains one protocol or concept, TCP being so complex is spread over multiple chapters. One thing I really appreciate with this book is that every chapter includes a section on attacks that has been employed against the protocols. This information is invaluable if you must implement the protocols yourself and makes sure you won't get hit by the same problems as people were in the past. This book is a must have for anyone who works with TCP/IP on a daily basis and/or develops networking software. Even if you work with protocols that are not IP based this book still contains lots of really good ideas that can be reused. clear descriptive guide
This book is very well written and full of hidden gems about tcp and ip design infrastructure. Each chapter is well thought out and usefully laid out. I would definitely recommend this book to those who want to know more about TCP/IP protocols.

May be hard to read for a begginer
Beware - this book is completely different from the famous Stevens' first edition. Almost all material was updated by another author, and the writing style has changed - this second edition is no longer for a begginer (unlike the first edition). This is a good book though, as it's well packed with a lot of contemporary information, but it may not be easy to read. As for me, I dislike the discussion of IPv6 side-by-side with IPv4. I would prefer separate chapters on IPv6.

Truly A Labor Of Love
This book is both exhaustive and exhausting, but you can't stop reading it. It covers every single detail of TCP/IP, including history. There is nothing you would like to know that's not in the book. And every chapter is filled with references at the end, so you don't have to take his word for it. This is a work that makes the entire internet transparent. It includes both TCP/IP and the devices that carry it, and what standards cover what, and where to get them. Also it's not without humor. What about an RFC on TCP/IP over carrier pigeon. Narrow band and high latency, but hard to hack.

Must have
The three "Stevens" books probably do not need any recommendation or review. They are industry standard books used by countless programmers doing serious networking work. They are the gold standard of "the truth" and present the material as a technical reference book should. The text is clear while still discussing the details to their full depth. I've never heard anyone give anything but high praises to these books. The new author is just a knowledgeable as Steven and the material in the book is needed for today's networking. I would tend to shy away from the first edition and buy this one instead.

A Worthy Successor to the Original Classic
The authors of the 2nd edition managed to update and add lots of new material, yet it remains true to the spirit and style of Stevens' original classic. The new material on security and IPv6 is especially timely and relevant. To make room for the new stuff, lots of material on protocols that are now less used or less relevant to mainstream Internet functionality, such as RARP, NFS, BOOTP, SNMP, and SMTP has been removed. Also removed is the material from the 1st edition on dynamic routing protocols (e.g. OSPF, BGP), which I miss. Still, there are other books in which one can read about those.

Ce livre est tout simplement LA bible du modรจle TCP/IP. Tout aussi complet que les RFC mais expliquรฉ de maniรจre pratique et souvent illustrรฉ d'exemples. Un must have pour les professionnels et/ou les fans de rรฉseaux. PS: le Volume 2 par contre est complรจtement imbuvable sans de bonnes bases en programmation C.
