Q: Can this be attached to door frame rather than the floor (which is marble). It would need a hinged foot-plate

I don't see "why not",..., whether it back a window frame, (Mine was oak , door trim should be similar.I would not consider attaching it to a marble floor. Not durable enough for that.

The top cap opens then thread in the draw string. Then snap close

Q: How is this attached to the wall, vertically or horizontally?

The holes on the bottom of the photo can screw on the wall or the floor. Most people screw onto the wall because it does the least damage. It turns so it could be installed either vertically or horizontally. I believe most install them vertically.
