Databases Illuminated

Good guided experience from a professor with significant database experience
This was used for an upper division first databases course. The book has plenty of examples to demonstrate concepts and goes into proper detail on the basics primarily for RDBMS as you can see from the preview Amazon provides. The security chapter isn't a fully explanatory chapter, but provides a fairly wide list of topics that I've used to look into the individual topics further. This is the same for the Big Data and NoSQL chapter which talks a little bit about Hadoop, MapReduce, and a couple other less popular ones.

Should have been about 50 pages
I actually teach data science and this book was painful to read. It had a few good pieces but 50 pages could have easily done all of this justice. It looks like a couple of authors got together, wrote some initially useful things and then said: "ok, it's an academic textbook and it's too short--what do we do now?" The result: 600 pages of the driest babble and drivel I've ever seen. I would never expose a student to this. Sorry to be this forward, but this book really is that bad.

Worse than a root canal
I know that textbooks in general aren't great reads, but sweet mercy this book takes it to the next level. This book is so dense and painful that many timesi would have preferred running through a glass door than read it. If you have to get this for a class, I'm sorry. If you're just wanting to learn about databases, look elsewhere.
