The padding is substantial, thick and ironing is smooth. My only complaint is the iron holder/rack. It is pretty small and would work for an older iron, but if you have a larger modern iron, the rack is not functional (could even be dangerous). Unfortunately, the iron rack is not removable, but I was able to use it to hang a few hangers with freshly ironed clothes, so it can have a purpose.
