English description of German biotech autobiography
This is an English version of the Publishers Description. Detlev Riesner, professor emeritus for physical biology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, is not only an internationally renowned scientist, but also the founder of the biotech company Qiagen and he is a business angel investor. In his book "Experience between science and business, primarily with viroids, prions and QIAGEN", he tells, wrapped in humorous anecdotes and easy to read, not only how he also became a scientist and business angel. Rather, based on his story, he shows that success depends heavily on working with the right people at the right time and recognizing their qualities. In part, the book reads like a “Who's Who” of modern biotechnology. As a scientist, Riesner is one of the outstanding pioneers of research into infectious molecules, the viroids and prions, a class of pathogens that has long been considered impossible because it does not contain any genetic material made from nucleic acid. The basic research of Riesner and his three doctoral students Colpan, Henco and Schumacher formed the basis for the joint establishment of Qiagen in 1985 (at that time still under the name Diagen), which was recently taken over by the US laboratory outfitter Thermo Fisher for more than 10 billion euros. [NOTE: This acquisition deal was in fact not completed.]
