Focus and Thrive: Executive Functioning Strategies for Teens: Tools to Get Organized, Plan Ahead, and Achieve Your Goals

Great book - very easy to read
I have seen other books on executive functioning skills, and most are so full of fluff with pages and pages of material that really is not needed. Conversely, this book gets right down to the nitty gritty, so you can start implementing strategies from day one if you want. It's a great book for a teen to read himself or for a parent to do with the teen. I'm reading it with my teen. Then, I type up quick, brief summaries of the pertinent strategies (in her challenge areas) in a bullet point/number format. She is using this sheet as a tickler to help her remember to use these strategies to be more successful. We are in the last section of the book now and expect to finish very soon. Already, my teen is making positive changes, so there is progress. It's not major at this point, but it's definitely happening. This book is definitely a worthwhile purchase!

Ready to use out of the box
I found this book to be organized in such a manner to enable a teenager to recognize and diagnose both general and specific issues that commonly frustrate one. Then, it gives the teen the ‘elemental’ tools to readily analyze the ‘whys’, followed by ‘next level’ tools to work on managing their improvement or elimination. The tools laid out do not require a Professional Clinician, rather provide everything in useable form that a teenager can quite readily comprehend and construct their own path to success. This is quite the valuable resource, short of a more intractable need to engage a Professional, or paired with exactly that reach.Frankly, this reviewer could have used this some decades ago!

Specific guidance and strategies for many areas where teens can struggle
My girls aren’t teens yet, but I’ll be sharing this book with them when they are. In the meantime, the book helped me think through ways I can help them with tasks such as cleaning their rooms. It’s easy to read straight through but also functions well as a reference work with a good table of contents and index to help you find advice on whatever challenge you’re facing. I love how specific and clear the advice is, and I wish I could have read some of this as a teen and used it to help me talk through misunderstandings with my parents. I remember being panicky and paralyzed when my parents started having me call and make my own appointments. They totally didn’t get it that I wasn’t procrastinating or trying to shirk responsibility when I put it off; I was just scared to death and didn’t know what to say. I would have loved having this book walk me through the steps of what to prepare before calling and what to expect, even the advice to practice what I’m going to say when the receptionist answers the phone. I received a free digital review copy from the publisher.

Good little book
This little book is great. Its simple, practical, nothing mind-blowing, but solid advice and tools. Its short and accessible, and there’s none of the down-talking my teen hates! I think a lot of parents who’ve been wondering when their student will pick up these EF skills, will wish they’d just started working this program sooner. The truth is, their brains just aren’t fully developed yet, and they need a little more guidance & support to meet their potential. (The only reason I’m giving this 4 instead of 5 stars is because 5 would only be if my student somehow read this and experienced an instant dramatic improvement.)

Book came dented
Book came dented, really does not look great especially when it is meant to be a gift to my teenage son. Will need to change for a new one.
