Worth every dollar
Every song is great. The featured singers added a special touch as well. "Close to You," features a stellar performance by Donell Jones; it is one of the album's true highlights. James plays plays his soprano, interweaving those silky vocal lines with gorgeous fills. Former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett sings on the lilting ballad "When I Had the Chance," Heather Headley appears on the slippery-grooved Latin-tinged "I'm Waiting," and Mario does a magnificent job on the dancefloor stepper "That Look on Your Face."

Friends (featuring Boney James)
Following the colossal success of "Send One Your Love" from 2009, fans were anxiously waiting for the follow-up release from Boney James, entitled "Contact". This album contains mostly mellow, slow-tempo songs and vocal tracks, with very little groove & funk which is a little disappointing. The album is nice to have and listen to, but it is not nearly up to par with Boney's previous works. The music is good and Boney still sounds great, but overall it lacks the fire-power that Boney fans expect to hear from one of the best saxophonists in contemporary smooth jazz.As already mentioned by other reviewers, the biggest flaw of this album is the excessive use of guest artists and vocals (Donell Jones, LeToya Luckett, Mario & Heather Headley). Not that the vocals and vocalists are bad, but the song selection is just simply blasé. They are so easily forgettable. For example, "That Look On Your Face" featuring Mario is an interesting attempt at "house music", accompanied by Boney's tenor sax, but it seems out of place and doesn't really add anything to the album. The standout tracks are "Contact", "Spin", "Cry" & "Deep Time". Not a must-have, but average Boney is better than no Boney at all.

Didn't like it! It was depressing and had 4 vocals on it.
I bought this album from Amazon.com and for me, I don't care for vocals in my smooth jazz, unless someone like Eliane Elias is singing or Candy Moten w/Kirk Whalum on "All I Do." I really liked Boney's previous album, "Send One Your Love." But "Contact" doesn't seem to have any kind of concept or order to it. A smooth jazz song, then a vocal and more of the same. It seemed to me that Boney didn't have enough material to play. No wonder Boney has a hat on that's covering his face on the cover. Probably ashamed by his own lack of effort. I was depressed when it was over, a big 44 minutes, and immediately put on a Peter White CD which I also ordered from Amazon. It's called "Here We Go."There are lots of instruments on this CD and so far .. no vocals. I'm starting to feel better. I also remember an interview on LOVE 94 when it was still alive where the musician said he considers his instrument his voice. It brings to mind Candy Dulfer doing "Lily Was Here." It's almost as if her instrument is singing right along with the song. As for Boney, since he likes those vocals on his CD, why not issue an album with all vocals and have it put in the Rhythm & Blues section? Last but not least, some people stated what they felt killed off the Smooth Jazz stations. I say with LOVE 94 it was their insistence on playing Anita Baker, Celine Dion, Marvin Gaye, Sade, and that most hated of songs, "What's love got to do, got to do with it?" Screamed by Tina Turner. Only Sade belonged on the air but not once every hour. And it's funny that the show I looked forward to the most was Personal Notes with Boney James. He had songs by new artists and none of the above. I live in Florida. You just can't throw all that screaming at older folks and expect them to keep listening. I tuned them out in December and when I tried them again in February, they were historical.

Boney James - Contact
First, as a jazz educator I would like to mention that although Boney James is a great horn player, he's an R&B(Rhythm and Blues) he is not a jazz saxophonist. Listen to John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker just to name a few, that's jazz man. However, I love to listen to Boney's music, have most all of his CD's and have had the pleasure to meet him on one occasion and he is a fine, gifted young man. I like 'Contact' but like I'm not a big fan of all the lyrics, just too much on this CD. When I go to see a horn player or purchase a horn player's CD, well; I prefer to hear the player play his/her horn. This CD is very good, but I would prefer much less vocals and more sax playing. 'Shake It Up' was a huge success because it had some fine sax, trumpet and flugelhorn work that made this CD a a lot of fun to listen to, again, I very much appreciate Boney, but I hope his next release has less vocals and much more saxophone. All the very best to all of you, keep playing music and always listen to music. Get your children involved in music, when a child opens his music case; there is a new adventure, a new world that they will discover every time. All the best and God Bless - Peace~
