weird movie beautifully crafted. Not Elvis’s best acting.
Considering this movie was made in the era before color, one has to make allowances for what may be tropes now we’re not tropes then; what may be considered bad acting now may not have been considered bad acting then. however, what is most glaringly weird is to see Elvis doing his rock ‘n’ roll songs, shaking his pelvis, as he does in so many of his movies are that were plots reflecting the current times. Not a time 157 years ago. That juxtaposition is downright silly. And it’s also weird to see Elvis in such a wickedly violent movie. This was Elvis‘s first movie, and the only reason why he was in it is because his first widely distributed song, LOVE ME TENDER, became an international hit, so including him in the movie would be a boost in revenues for the producers. So there is value in that context. But Elvis’s acting was mediocre to bad. His singing, however, out of place in the story that takes place at the end of the Civil War, is great. it is a work for film study classes.

ELVIS IN HIS FIRST FILM!
Elvis Presley is third-billed in this 1956 civil war western-romance-tearjerker, and he is fabulous here, in an incredible romance co sharing Debra Paget with brother Richard Egan (who is always terrific ). Egan, as one of the Brothers Reno- returns from the war with some dough, only to find sweetheart has married his guitar playing younger brother. Good guys sort of turn into bad buddies who come back wanting some of Brothers dough all of it takes us on a train chase, with double cross tragedy, , and what an ending! Elvis sings 4 songs that really fit nicely for civil war era ''Rock & Roll'' substitutes. This great little Fox Classic helped to Introduce CINEMASCOPE B & W to audiences in 1956 and made lots of money for the studio. Great Movie! Great product wit some NEAT EXTRAS.

Not Elvis's best,by a long shot
It's not Elvis's best,it's far from it.But this is a landmark film for another reason. When this was made,Elvis Presley was traded. He did a screen test for MGM,and his manager,Colonel Parker(who wasn't a real colonel, that was just a southern title)advised him not to take the part he was offered. He was traded to Paramount and the movie "The Reno Brothers"which was being filmed.Elvis would be one of the Rino brothers in his first film, which would be renamed Love Me Tender-They tried to sneak 3 of his songs in,and instead of having "hillbilly actors" singing them,he insisted that the movie be renamed and that him and his band-the Jordannaires-sing it.That's how it became the first of Presley's movies. It made it's 6.5 million dollar budget back in 4 days...That's an awful lot of bucks for a time when gas was a quarter for a gallon, huh?

MY ERA....
A very confident Elvis Presley in his first film. His presence overshadowed the main cast. If he hadn't been promoted as a singer by Col Parker, he would have probably made it as a very good actor. His best film, King Creole. He is just like a young James Cagney. Print is sharp, however, the soundtrack has been ruined by digital processing. The sound is OK, however it is thin and no lower frequencies, as is often the case. Just listen to the trailers on the extras for the full FOX sound. Recommended.

Love Me Tender
This the first Elvis Presley Film, features superb sharpness, and a grayscale that’s magnificently rendered with strong black levels and pure whites. Contrast has been dialed in perfectly for a reference quality black and white transfer. (5/5),Love Me Tender, Poor Boy, Let Me and We’re Gonna Move. His voice is front and centre, warm, detailed with a wider front soundstage. Just to hear our King sing with DTS lossless track alone is worth the price of admission. There is minimal surround activity.
