TAMIYA America, Inc 1/48 Lockheed P-38H Lightning Limited Edition, TAM25199

Oh yes it has been some 50 years ago I used to put together mostly model planes of 1:72 scale, but never did take care of them. Wow, price of models sure has changed and now I am enjoying puttng together 1:48 scale planes, focusing on WWII planes used in the 7th AAF. This P-38 is a little bit of a challenge and fun - I have the time since I'm retired and don't have to get up for work.

I've followed the release of this kit through various hobby magazines and the kit is just spectacular. Clean , crisp molding. I was very surprised that a white box Tamiya kit was being sold on Amazon by Horizon Hobby and immediately ordered the kit. The kit itself came within a week and was well packed. The kit itself was up to Tamiya's usual high quality with everything succinctly organized inside the box. Please take note that this is not a beginner's kit and should be treated accordingly.

This is the already excellent P-38F/G kit that has been available for some time, with additional parts to covert to P-38H configuration. Like its predecessor, this Tamiya kit sets the (very high) standard for Lockheed Lightning model kits in any scale.

Wow, received the white box iteration. This is a premium kit. The wait was worth it. Tamiya knocked it out of the park .

This kit is a dream to build. Every part fits perfectly and the detail is superb, especially in the landing gear bays. I built it with eduard photoetch sets and a lot of scratchbuilt details.

待望のタミヤ製P-38のバリエーションキットですが、意外にも限定商品としてのリリースです。パッケージは白箱にラベルを貼っただけの簡素なもので、あまり購買意欲をそそるものではなく、デカール替え限定品でもちゃんと専用パッケージを用意するハセガワなどを見習って欲しいです。H型はG型のエンジン強化型で、601機が生産されており、G型との外観上の相違点はほとんどありませんが、本製品では新規パーツの追加により、計器盤などの僅かな相違点もしっかり再現されています。本製品にはF/G型のパーツとデカールもそのまま入っており、H型のデカールとパーツ(Jランナー)を追加した内容なので、F/G型のキットよりお得な内容ですが、実機解説書はオミットされているのが残念です。キットそのものは、プロポーション、ディテール、組み立て易さ共に優れた、このスケールの決定版ですが、パーツ数は多く細かいので、相応の手間の覚悟は必要です。入っているH型のマーキングは、キットの説明書には所属部隊しか書かれていませんが、日本機を9機撃墜したエースのペリー・ダール中尉機です。本製品の様に、エースの乗機や逸話のある機体のマーキングをチョイスしているにもかかわらず、何故か説明書では触れていないキットも多いですが、ユーザーに関心を持ってもらう為にも詳細な解説もすべきでしょう。入っているH型のマーキングが一種だけなのは物足りないので、せめて二種くらいは入れて欲しかったです。マイナーチェンジのバリエーションも結構ですが、やはり本命はJ/L型だと思うので、そちらのリリースも早めにお願いしたいですね。
