Useless
The physical design of the Barska waterproof Compass 7x42 is sound, Howver, the compass and therefore the instrument is completely useless. The compass sticks inconsistently. I have used a set of binoculars with this type of compass since the Vietnam era without a problem. Here I opted a monocular - bad decision. Unfortunately, It took too long for the return period to complete the thorough testing. The compass does not work under any angle condition. Do not buy this item. The manufacturing standards are sloppy compared to other more reliable items.

Far Superior to any Compass type Binoculars
I needed magnification with a compass being out in the Gulf of Mexico and a way to judge distance as well. This is the best "bang for the buck" for that purpose. Excellent light gathering, very good lens, and it may be manufactured in China, but it was certainly designed by those in the USA as well as using the best components ! On the side there is a hand strap so that you don't drop it even with wet hands, the carrying pouch is very well made and comes with a belt strap. The lens covers are connected so that you don't lose them. Fantastic warranty which probably will not be needed as it is a well built item. Finding the compass in the monocular is instant, but never annoying. Why have big, heavy, cumbersome binoculars that take up so much room when this does the same job in a well designed and well built package? And I feel safer with one hand on the boat steering wheel when holding something to find my direction as that also allows a steadier grip and less movement of the monocular, rather than two hands on binoculars and hope the boat can steer itself....don't think so. Bottom line.....excellent product, great value, and extremely useful and if you think that you will use it at night, then take a small flashlight and put it above the unit and the compass is as bright as in the daytime !

Got a chance to use it in real situation. It is fragile (Italian for easy to break).
First, when I ordered it couple of years ago, the inclosed compass was the main factor. Yes, it has a MRAD reticle, but it is only divisions of 10. Works for ships and boats. But the vertical 5 was actually 4.5 and so on so forth. Recently, I had a chance to use it in marine situation. And please be careful with the eyepiece end. It is not calculated for any sidewise force. Stow it in its pouch and not in your pocket. My scope was damaged in several places. The rubber standoff popped right off with the plastic ring breaking. I thought I lost it to the ocean - but got it back miraculously. Then, the entire eyepiece assembly popped out. The rubber gasket was cut too. Now I purchased a rubber gasket and popped the assembly back. Optically, while it worked, it was really good for calculating the distances and finding mooring balls. Sadly this will become a shelf monocular and will not accompany me in future adventures.

not bad. Compass accurate
For price, not bad. Compass accurate, and optics good to at least 75 percent of the field. They are not Zeiss or Swar's, but very good. I purchased these over others as 7 by 42 offers less shake than 8 by 42. Good build, feels good, compass works at reasonable angles of inclination, reticle clear, compass readings big and clear. Good for my hiking/navigating, hunting purposes. If you are going to beat up an optic while using them, etch, they seem up to the task.

Handy Monocular
I bought this monocular to replace a binocular that the grand kids destroyed. I figured they would have a more difficult time with the monocular. I didn't figure that this would be MY go to device for looking afar. It works very well. My only real complaint is that the compass sticks and has to be shaken to try to attain accuracy. I use the compass feature often so this is a bit of a negative and this is the reason I only gave this product 4 stars. Otherwise it works great and I really like it. I may buy a second one for the grand kids.

Piece of junk for the serious boater! I know, I have had two of them.
Used this product three times on my boat. The compass stopped working. Called Barska customer service. Cost $20 to repair or replace it. Customer service not helpful. Buy it and when it will not last you have to pay to use the warranty. They sent me another Piece of junk and within a few days the compass was slanted at a 45 degree angle. Not dropped, no rough usage. Unusable. Even the lens covers do not fit.

Bubble Trouble x3
I bought this Barska monocular for my husband's Christmas present. When he opened it he found an air bubble in the compass part of the monocular. The compass card floats in a liquid that damps its motion, and the bubble kept the compass from moving properly. I returned the defective monocular to Amazon who replaced it promptly. When he opened the second monocular, it also had a bubble in the compass. He wrote Barska who replied, "Hello William, I will be happy to assist you today. This looks to be a defect. I highly recommend returning/replacing these with Amazon." I returned the second monocular to Amazon and purchased a third. On arrival, it also had a bubble in the compass. My husband again wrote to Barska, but after four business days had not received a reply. I am returning that monocular to Amazon as well. With three defective monoculars in a row, it is obvious that Barska has a serious unresovlved quality control problem.

Alot of fun
Compass, rough rangefinder, lighted for night cubscout operations. Buy one for the kids. Great learning tool. Can even be used as low power telescope for stargazing at the edge of the campfire. No tactical use but fun for the family. Skip the bino's and get one of these for outdoor rec, you won't be sorry.

Would recommand to every navigator :)
This tool is sooo useful :) You can put a small red light on the white spot you see on top of the monocular and you're set for night navigation too! We did some night navigation in the "passe st-roch" on st-laurence river and this was our tool.

Not great quality for the money
This is the second monocular like this that I have bought and they both appear to have come out of the same factory so I knew what to expect. My other one was branded Celestron who make the telescopes but with a mil gauge compass (6400 "degrees" instead of 360) which I hadn't expected when I purchased and wanted a standard compass bearing measurement so I opted for this one even though I knew it was likely of the same quality. The price of this has varied over the last few months - ranging from over £100 (£120 or so I seem to remember) down to the price I eventually paid at just over £65 and I have to say for the quality even this is really too expensive due to a couple of reasons that I will go in to in a minute. Really I have had better binoculars (admittedly without the compass) for less than half this price. I definitely wouldn't have paid the higher price they have been on for. So now on to the problems. Firstly - the lens, This is nothing special, even when you dial the focus in sharp but it is OK. The issue comes with the act of focussing the lens for viewing an object. Depending on distance, you can end up with an object in focus which results in the reticle and compass going completely blurry. Once you adjust the focus for the reticle and compass, the subject is blurry. The design of how the reticle and compass work in conjunction with the focus for distance is really not good. The second issue is the compass itself. It is readable enough and doesn't need tonnes of light although needs to be reasonable, but this can be compensated by injecting some artificial light through the aid of a torch if need be. The main issue is it sticks, it sticks quite badly and does so a lot - I certainly don't think you would want to rely on it as your main navigation aid. My view is this is for a guide only or for confirming what you think a bearing should be but not really recommended if your life depended on it! I would like to go on to add that I do not believe this to just be a faulty unit. Both these issues are identical to the equivalent functions on my Celestron version - they really do look like they come out of the same factory with a similar pouch and box just with different options on the reticle and body colour. I do like the idea of having the inbuilt compass and I have a really high quality pair of binoculars (Bynolyt SeaRanger II - that are absolutely brilliant - same brand I believe has been used by RNLI ) that have this function - but as I only really have one effective eye due to bad eyesight in the other, and the fact I wanted to have something small and convenient for use on a RHIB for scuba diving and spotting, I was willing to pick this up as a backup - even though I knew the likely faults before I purchased. I do wish there was a better quality version - but I begrudgingly stumped for this over-priced not great quality one because I haven't seen anything else around in a monocular that doesn't seem to be made to a higher quality design.

Good in sunlight not so good at night.
The inside reticle fell off and I had to remove it. I'm sure there are better monoculars out there than this one.

Four Stars
as advertised...but the range finder is hard to use in the field without a calculator
