Completely eliminating sugar made my cravings grow and a struggle ensued.. I had to have a fix (sugar). In addition, eliminating sugar meant very few choices in what I could eat. Eliminating sugar meant eliminating all starch. I didn't have enough choices and it was hard to stop eating so many of the foods that I had been eating all of my life. I am much happier and can live with these changes. Review: Not a good cook book of non- meat eaters or those lactose intolerant. - I found this book to be not quite what I had expected. The part written by the doctor contains perhaps the most concise and well written explanation of insulin resistance that has so far been penned. I only wish the recipe part with Danna Carpenter had been well rounded and included at least a few recipes for people who did not want to make meat their be all and end all in the diet process. Clearly the aim was to focus on what the authors saw as the average American and hence if you shun meat for ethical or religious grounds the recipe section can offer you almost nothing. Additionally if you are lactose sensitive the recipes will be near impossible with heavy reliance on milk products, including whey protein powder. Once again there is no mention of possible low carbohydrate cheese substitutes Gluten is mentioned in two sentences - not a single recipe, textured vegetable protein not even mentioned and certainly no recipes using it and the same for tofu. Not a good book of non- meat eaters or those lactose intolerant. Otherwise contains good if not great information and moderately easy to make, meat based, recipes the average person should enjoy

Great Book and Diet
Pretty easy to follow this diet, especially when it makes you feel better and you can get off medicines. Before I started the diet, I was taking 7 different meds a day for high cholesterol, GERDS, high triglycerides, and rapid pulse, plus I was diabetic. I was also almost 25 pounds over my ideal weight and kept gaining. In only a few months after changing my diet, I dropped over 20 pounds and even after two years am still taking 0 (zero, none, nada, no) meds. All my numbers are fine and I am no longer diabetic. I am the poster child for this diet. It is great!

Basic concept valid but outdated
I wanted to like this book. I would return it if I didnโt have to pay return shipping. Although the basic concept of Glycemic load is valid and very helpful, since it was written in 2009, many of the ingredients in recipes, are no longer considered โgoodโ for you. Items like splenda and using processed all bran cereal (BHT added)are just 2 that come to mind. I also am a โsimple eaterโ, donโt like recipes with a bunch of ingredients I have to buy ahead of time. Was hoping for some very basic ways to change up food choices to make better meals. We are retired and I have to provide 3 meals a day. After 45 yrs of coming up with meal ideas, I just want to find recipes that are good, good for you and easy. So if you donโt care for my style of eating, you may find the book helpful. I purchased the First bok, the โGlycemic load dietโ together with this. Thats gave me the info I needed and a few simpler recipes. I should have stuck with just that.

The receipes are easy
The receipes in this book are so easy and so very good. I love the photos and the all the ingredents are easy to find. Keep it handy in your kitchen and if you buy it used...cheap...buy two and keep on in your vehicle so that you have it when you go to the grocery store...that is what I do and it really helps me purchase the food I need.

Love this Book
This book has helped get m blood sugar in control tremendously! It has tasty recipes that look complicated, but aren't. They're very easy to alter to fit your needs. I'm not a stir fry fan in one, but I make the marinade and marinate chicken breast with it and grill them instead. Everything is very tasty and filling.

Liked it very much
This is a good cookbook with good cooking instructions and tips as well as nice recipes. I appreciated the "non-recipe" recipes that were suggestions on what to eat at those times you're just staring in the frige not really wanting to cook. I did think it was strange that the recipes all had a macronutrient breakdown but no glycemic load per serving listed. I guess there are resources online that we could use to calculate these ourselves, but I think that Carpender could have done that as the author of the book. Maybe I just wasn't seeing it. Comment on this review if you know where the recipe glycemic loads are listed! I'd like to have an easy way to ballpark my daily total glycemic load.

Great help
I was recently diagnosed with high insulin levels and told to eat a low carb diet. I was afraid I was going to eat something I shouldn't because of my crazy sweet tooth and love of pasta but with this book, I know I can keep my carb/glycemic load low and not feel deprived.

Weirdly American
Intentions of this book are good no doubt, but somehow all the recipes are a bit too American for my taste, and have ingredients that don't appear in European supermarkets. Vanilla Whey Protein Powder, anyone? Or Splenda, Sucanat, guar gum, vege-sal, chipotles canned in adobo, or catfish nuggets? All of this stuff is interesting when you are on a US holiday and shopping in Wall-Mart, but not practical for every day use on the East side of the Pond.

Excellent cook book
I am thoroughly enjoying going through this cookbook and picking recipes to try. It's nice knowing whatever I pick is something I can eat. I cook a lot of meals for my family that I can't eat, and the goal is to find good healthy meals for me as well!
