Is this desk mat hard? As in if I was to write with a single piece of paper, would the pen dig in and make a hole.

The desk mat is a little bit soft but hard enough to allow writing with a ball pen on a single piece of paper. I can recommend the desk mat.

I estimate at around 2mm thick. Any thicker and I think you would puncture the paper as you wrote on it. I like mine very much and I use it both for writing on but also as a mouse mat.
