Bokashi means fermented organic matter in Japanese. It is an ingenious Japanese system that ferments all your kitchen waste and transforms it into the true organic fertilizer. It is perfect composting for your gardens. The VermiTek Bokashi composting kit includes one piece of 5 gal bucket with strainer and spigot, Bokashi juice cup and compactor, and one piece of 3/4 gal kitchen compost pail. It is a convenient, easy and quick system to compost food waste in your kitchen, garage, or apartment. Bokashi composting uses a selected group of microorganisms to anaerobically ferment organic waste. The microorganisms are applied using an impregnation carrier such as rice or wheat bran. The fermentation process breaks down the organic matters with very minimum odor. Since the process is done in a closed system, there will be no worry about insects and smells. This makes it ideal for urban or business settings. Unlike other composting systems, the VermiTek Bokashi systems can break down items like meat, fish and dairy products. Bokashi composting is fast and usually takes two weeks. The finished product smells a little bit sweet and pickled odor, and you will often see white mold mycelium coating the surface. Once the fermentation has completed, you can add the scraps to a worm bin or bury them directly in the soil. They will take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to fully integrate into the soil depending upon your local soil biological activity and local climate.

it smells like death. The lingering type of death
I'm still getting used to indoor composting. I'm not sure about the zero smell, cause if you open that lid, then have mercy on your soul, it smells like death. The lingering type of death, that seeps into your clothing and won't come out. Your house will smell to kingdom come, so only open that lid if you are ready for the bog of eternal stench. Same goes for the liquid that you drain. It smells like stomach bile and my plants smell like vomit now, but they look healthy.Oh, and I only have about half of my sense of smell. So I can barely smell anything, but I can smell this. But, I'm helping the environment! So that's cool.
