Medium Rarities

Okay, folks. In the world of heavy rock, metal, or whatever one classifies Mastodon, it is time to crown them once and for all America's best heavy band. Period. "Medium Rarities" is as essential as their studio releases, and every one of those are essential as well, whether it be the near hardcore of "Remission", the prog of "Crack The Skye" or the fantastic blending into the best songwriting of their career on "The Hunter". There are a few instrumental versions of previous releases, some live cuts, and a cover or two that still manage to sound like a cohesive album. The playing has never been better, and the coolest thing about this album is the extreme curveball they throw with a Flaming Lips tune, "A Spoonful Weighs A Ton", which shocks you as it starts out literally as beautiful as any great ballad ever. There is some heavier space in it, but refrained, as the vocals by whomever (I never have seen Mastodon live, so I don't know whose voice belongs to who, and I suppose I should go to youtube and figure it out) are just as pretty as the melody. Beware, Mastodon fans of the early stuff. They might have a trick up their sleeve when the next album rolls around. For me, exploration into the more pretty stuff is fine and dandy. Do it right, as they did on this cover, and we'll have that band that can pull of moments of balladry like BOC or Rush, such as "Losing It". And Metallica gets covered this time. It's a straight rendition of the instrumental "Orion" but it works just fine. Mastodon are truly special. They will not allow themselves to be driven into corners or be forced to play and record what they do not want to do, and that will serve them well in the future. They are one of the few bands out there with the chops to incrementally increase the songwriting melodies and structures and still have their devoted audience in their corner. "Medium Rarities" is a great album, and I think a hint of things to come.

I see alot of reviewers high on this album but I don't see it especially compared to the rest of their catalog. This seems like a cash grab, with a stolen Cattle Decapitation title, containing more regurgitated material than lost gems. Lots of live and instrumental filler that does little to improve on or show variations of the original songs. I love Mastodon but they aren't good enough or far enough into their career to pull something like this moderately boring run of the mill compilation.

I like Old Mastodon more that their later stuff, so I wasn’t even gonna bother with this. But what the hell, I got it anyway and I put it on my music player, and songs kept popping up I didn’t recognize but reeealy liked. The instrumentals, the live stuff, the new ones... I gotta admit, I haven’t liked Mastodon this much since Leviathan.

So took me awhile to write this review, my cat who was my record listening buddy died unexpectedly the morning after this record arrived in the mail. So it sat down in the rec room for a couple weeks, now that I've listened through it a couple times I will say it is definitely for their music nerd fans. Falling into that category I really enjoy the instrumentals, covers and live stuff plus the 1 unreleased song which is pretty cool. If you are looking to get into mastodon maybe not the best choice but if you are a fan this is a worthy purchase.

A collection of a lot of Mastodon's "rarer" music that was not as popular at the time of release. This is a great looking and sounding vinyl.

Price was awesome for this rarities 2 album colored set. Condition of albums was awesome! The music flat out rocks. Very happy with this purchase . Buy it!

The c d kicks ass mastodon always rocks but the condition of the cd cover and plastic wrapper was dirty scratched up dented it looks like it spent some time on the floor being walked on

My copy was missing the Side C/D disc yet still factory sealed.

Mastodon - Medium Rarities – 11.09.2020Eigentlich wollten die aus Atlanta stammenden Mastodon in 2020 ihr neues Album veröffentlichen. Doch Covid-19 kam dazwischen und durchkreuzte die Pläne. Stattdessen, quasi als Ersatz, kommt nun ein „Raritäten“-Album als Zwischenmahlzeit, die die Wartezeit auf den nächsten Longplayer verkürzen soll. Bei solchen Compilationen bin ich immer etwas kritisch, vielleicht auch etwas zu kritisch. Der Album-Titel verrät es im Grunde genommen schon vorab: nicht alles ist eine Rarität. Knapp die Hälfte/“Medium“ sind wirklich Raritäten, der Rest war schon mal das gewesen (wenn man die Instrumentals auf den B-Seiten dazu zählt). Und weil der Platz für „Wiederholungsstücke“ drauf ging, fehlen einige Perlen an Raritäten. Das werde ich wohl nie verstehen, warum man sich da nicht mehr Mühe gibt.Das Album beginnt mit dem unveröffentlichten Track FALLEN TORCHES. Einer typischen Mastodon-Nummer nach dem Strickmuster der letzten Alben. Guter Vier-Sterne Song aber als Kaufanreiz doch etwas zu wenig.Das Album enthält fünf Live-Songs:CAPILLARIAN CREST (Live)BLOOD & THUNDER (Live)IRON TUSK (Live)CRYSTAL SKULL (Live)Diese vier Songs waren schon auf dem Live-Album LIVE AT BRIXTON (2014) enthalten.Der fünfte Live-Song CIRCLE OF CYSQUATSCH war zwar auch als Live-Version auf LIVE AT BRIXTON, hier scheint aber eine Aufnahme von einem anderen Konzert aus 2006/2007 zu sein. Leider steht in den Liner-Notes keinerlei Angaben zu den Live-Aufnahmen.Weiter sind einige Instrumental Versionen enthalten:ASLEEP IN THE DEEP (Instrumental) [B-Seite der gleichnamigen Picture-Disc]TOE TO TOES (Instrumental) [B-Seite der gleichnamigen Picture-Disc]JAGUAR GOD (Instrumental) Bisher nicht veröffentlicht.HALLOWEEN (Instrumental) [B-Side Picture Disc THE MOTHERLAND]Nun kommen die „richtigen“ Raritäten. Drei Cover sind auf dem Album:A COMMOTION (Feist Cover) gab es mal als Download. Ein Projekt aus 2012, wo Mastodon und Sängerin Feist sich gegenseitig coverten. Aus Mastodon und Feist wurde "Feistodon". Super, dass der Song nun hier enthalten ist. Es wäre aber vielleicht auch eine Idee gewesen BLACK TONGUE; was Feist gecovert hat, hier ebenfalls mit draufzupacken.A SPOONFUL WEIGHS A TON (The Flaming Lips Cover) [2012 als Picture Disc erschienen]. Dieser Song wurde, wie A COMMOTION, zu Ehren des „Records Store Day“ aufgenommen.ORION (Metallica cover)Orion war auf „Kerrang - A 20th Anniversary Tribute to Metallica's Master of Puppets "Remastered" (2006)“ enthalten und ist ein Highlight. So machen Rarities richtig Spaß.Orion war auch auf der 2008er erschienenen Vinyl-Box MASTODON enthalten. Genauso wie THE BIT und das Thin Lizzy Cover EMERALD, was hier leider auch nicht dabei ist.ATLANTA (Features Gibby Haynes) [From Adult Swim Singles Collection]War bisher nur online über Adult Swim‘s Single Series als Download erhältlich (2014) und kam 2015 als Picture-Disc heraus. An den Vocals ist Gibby Haynes von Butthole Surfers.Auf der B-Seite der gleichnamigen Single war auch eine Instrumental Version enthalten, die hier leider fehlt Zwei Soundtrack-Songs sind dabei:CUT YOU UP WITH A LINOLEUM KNIFE (Original Song from the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters Soundtrack)Erschienen auf dem Soundtrack 2007.WHITE WALKER (Original Song from Game of Thrones)Wurde im März 2015 als Spundtrack CATH THE THRONE VOL. II zum kostenfreien Download über iTunes und SoundCloud veröffentlicht, (gibt es aber zumindest auf iTunes nicht mehr zum Download). Am 19. Februar 2016 erschien das Lied auf einer limitierten 12"-Picture Disc. Die B-Seite enthielt eine A-Capella-Version, die leider hier nicht mit enthalten ist Falls noch nicht bekannt: Mastodon haben tatsächlich in Game of Thrones Gastauftritte als die Untoten White Walker im Staffelfinale. Im Staffel 5 waren sie als Wildlinge ebenfalls zu sehen.Was ich auf so einer Compilation erwarte und vermisse sind die Veröffentlichungen ausser der Reihe und eben alle auf einem Album. Wie das letztjährige Cover von STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, mit einer Live-Version auf der B-Seite. Oder das ZZ Top Cover JUST GOT PAID, das 2009 auf dem Sampler COVERED, A REVOLUTION IN SOUND enthalten war und ebenso auf dem Soundtrack zu TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON. Mastodon veröffentlichten den Song in 2010 als Single, mit THE BIT auf der B-Seite (ein Cover von The Melvins aus 1996; s.o.). Auch das erwähnte Thin Lizzy Cover EMERALD wurde leider nicht berücksichtigt. Und wenn man schon Instrumentals veröffentlicht, dann bitte alle, inkl. ATLANTA, wobei die Instrumentals zwar nett aber letztendlich verzichtbar sind. Auch die A-Capella Version von WHITE WALKER wäre eigentlich Pflicht gewesen diese hier mit draufzupacken. Das im Rahmen der Adult-Swim-Serie 2011 als Download erhältliche DEATHB0UND hätte hier auch mit draufgehört (war zwar auf der Bonus Version von THE HUNTER enthalten, hätte aber hier super dazu gepasst). Das RUFUS LIVES, von aktuellen BILL &TED FACE THE MUSIC Soundtrack nicht dabei sein kann, liegt auf der Hand. Es kann sein, dass in der Auflistung noch fehlt. Angesichts des Dickichts an Sonderveröffentlichungen, da sind ja Mastodon Spezialisten, könnte evtl. was fehlen. Soweit mir möglich habe ich alles zusammengetragen, was ich so einigermaßen mitbekommen habe.Statt der Live-Stücke all den hier aufgeführten Rest zu veröffentlichen, das wäre nicht nur MEDIUM sondern WELL DONE gewesen. Und weil das Album leider eher Medium ist, würde es normalerweise mediummäßige drei Sterne bekommen. Die starken restlichen bzw. „richtigen“ Raritäten verdienen aber noch einen knappen vierten Stern. Für Mastodon Fans dennoch Pflicht.

The music on the CD is 5 stars. However I have bought it twice and both times the CD skips on my player. Amazons policy was not very helpful as the did not offer a replacement copy. I want to buy this album again but really do not want a third damaged copy. Dont know if it's a manufacturer problem or just bad luck.

As collections of b-sides, live recordings and covers go, this is a great album from the awesome Mastodon. It hangs together well for such an eclectic mix.

Even though this is rarities live instrumentals etc, this is a fantastic album it ebbs and flows it is gentle then brutal there is not a bad track on here if you love mastodon you will love this.

Dave T,Same problems as D Hayward, my cd copy was faulty and wouldn't play pass the first track, tried playing on several machines with the same outcome, I did though however purchase the vinyl edition and the music is excellent, so no stars for cd and 5 stars for the vinyl.
