Can this been used on cracks in plaster directly above a gas fire.. ie is it heat resistant?

I would say no. I would use a fine heat resistant filler.

Can this be used on cracks in plaster ?

Yes, we've used it on cracks in paint and plaster, by the time you've done your filler with this and sand it back down to paint you can't tell there was ever anything wrong. I did some with just filler and the cracks came back within a couple of weeks.
