I have always been hesitant to color my hair after a family member's hair fell out from doing it. However, I have been applying my own hair relaxer for 38 years without a problem, mainly because I only do it every three to four months instead of beauticians claiming touch-ups should be done every four to six weeks. I figured if I can apply relaxer on my head and a few others, coloring my own hair couldn't possibly be that hard. I read the instructions front to back five times anyway, and it really was easy to do. I would have kept my grays if they grew in evenly like a few other family members' hair, but mine were growing in like unruly lawn weeds. One here. One there. Chaotic looking. Never on strands. Just small little curlies. I tolerated that for over a year, hoping they would grow out. They never did, so I am now a first-time dyer. I was concerned by why my scalp felt warm like I'd used tea tree oil, but apparently that's normal. I expected it to be cold like relaxer. After a couple hours after rinsing with conditioner and letting my hair air dry, my scalp stopped having that spa heat feeling and went back to normal. I like it! My hair was all black and I didn't want to use two boxes (as the box recommends) in case anything went wrong. It's hard to see if you're not in front of me, but the dye made all of my gray hair a light brown and streaks are sprinkled throughout my black hair. Because I was fine with black hair in the first place, I like this look. I'm being extremely careful about the timeline for deep conditioning, oiling and using heat products too so I can avoid all the color hair damage stories I hear about. So far, so good. Unless something changes, this review will keep its five stars.

Amazing color

Update: I have thick, mid-back length, kinky (4C, some parts looser) natural hair that wasn't color-treated. I used two boxes of the brown cinnamon. It dyed my gray hair well. For the length and thickness of my hair 3 boxes would have been good to use the first time. Also sitting under a warm dryer with a plastic cap for about 30 minutes helps the color really get more vibrant. Particularly the gray hair so make sure you watch it. The conditioner smells nice and has good slip. I’m not an expert so I didn’t apply it evenly. If you need to get rid of grays this is good. It doesn’t replace a skilled hairdresser who can make the color look more natural but it does the job. For me it lasts more than 6 months for the not gray hair. Grays start showing again after 2-3 months.

The color barely shows

My hair was naturally black before using this product. The color on my ends is now a medium brown color, but not light at all. Just enough to see a difference and contrast. It has been 4 months since I used the product and it looks as if my hair got dyed yesterday. The color probably will run for a few days after, but it subsided for me within a week. I do recommend if you want a subtle but noticeable color.
