Spanish and the Medical Interview: A Textbook for Clinically Relevant Medical Spanish

I pirate my real assigned textbooks; got this one for pleasure, & glad I did!
I'm studying medical Spanish on my own (and hopefully soon helping my school develop a formal class on it, or at least pitching my own independent study). I was looking up books to use, and fell in love with this one. It's really soundly organized, has a wealth of culturally important information, is great about clearing up tricky spots/ambiguities that arise from differences between semantic and literal translations, and is all-around one of the best resources I've ever found for language learning in general, let alone in such a specialized area. I'm very happy with the way it builds on the language foundations/skills throughout the chapters while progressing through intuitively arranged layers of medical complexity as well. It's just absolutely a stellar textbook. It's a pleasure to work through, highlight, make Anki cards from, and just generally keep around to help me maintain a sense of romanticizing my student experience when I don't want to confront how mundane my actual homework is, lol.I haven't paid a dime so far in three semesters for any of my officially assigned textbooks or access codes (there are nearly always workarounds if you just look! Screw the publisher racket! Yarr! -- but please do pay for small texts from independent creators, like purchasing plays or other literary texts from their authors or small publishers, that's different) ... but I'm really glad I impulsively got this textbook as a gift to myself, and I expect to continue getting great use out of it, both in concerted effortful chunks at a time, and also gradually revisiting it over time all throughout undergrad and probably beyond.

Absolute necessity for medical interpreters!
I bought this book to help prepare myself in my journey as a medical interpreter. This book covers a broad range of topics including specialties, diagnoses, procedures, and more. Not only does it provide excellent medical terminology, but it also includes sample questions and real-world scenarios in which the terms could be used, which makes the book very relatable and useful. I recommend this book to anyone in the medical field looking to polish their medical terminology and interpretation skills. I am so thrilled that I found this book, more so because of the reputable and professional author.

Only For Intermediates and Advanced
Very well organized and written. There are, however, some translation errors. This book is NOT for beginners. The chapters are well organized.Great for physicians!Out of all the medical Spanish books I've looked at, this is by far the best for intermediate learners. There is a lot of vocabulary to be learned but it's repetitious once you go through a couple of chapters. The exercises at the end of each chapter are pretty straight forward. The videos are also helpful, but more basic than the book. Each chapter is very detailed for it's respective section. You will learn a lot.I do wish the book would have an accompanying certifying exam in medical Spanish and CME credit eligible.Otherwise, I highly recommend this book for intermediate Spanish speakers who want to stand out on the wards.

For intermediate and fluent Spanish speakers in healthcare
Highly recommend this book! I am a proficient/conversational Spanish speaker working in healthcare. This is a fantastic resource. There is grammar review, an array of vocabulary, relevant and culturally sensitive dialogue, and exercises to test yourself. I love that the author also has notes regarding cultural considerations for working with Hispanic people in a healthcare setting.

PURE Crap Kindle Version - buyer beware
TERRIBLE KINDLE EDITION!The people who made this obvious didn't care or didn't even run through it once. You know how on kindle books there will be graphs and figures? Well, 60-70% of them are just fine, but there are a large percentage where they literally try to fit a 50 line vocabulary chart onto one page or one image. This is the equivalent of probably 4 pt font on microsoft word. Literally. I can read 8 pt font on microsoft word easily, this is much smaller. Maybe it's 5 point font. Whatever it is, it's way to small and clearly shows they didn't care when putting this together. I was viewing this on a 24 inch monitor that has 1080p. I couldn't imagine if it was on a 13 or 15 inch laptop or an actual kindle!!!!! It's ridiculous that they can get away with such a terrible job. It's funny because all they had to do was split up the images, simply do a 10 or 20 line chart, but they have plenty of 60 or 80 line charts that are so bad they are unreadable. And since the vocabulary learning is a MAJOR part of what this book is for, it's makes the kindle version unusable and pathetic. So disappointed. The books seems great though, I'm returning my kindle version and buying the actual book.

35 years teaching, complete information, well laid out
Getting ready to teach a course in medical conversation at a large university in the Honors College. This book provides a lot of cultural notes, which may be even more important than the excellent coverage of language.

You will learn a great deal.
Great book. Definitely focuses on health care, interviews, history and physical. Great for outpatient care and E.R. care. Very well done, also covers much of the cultural aspects of understanding Spanish speaking patients and their families. It also comes with a password to view videos you can watch to augment your learning, listening to the words, pronunciations.

It also teaches cultural aspects so I recommend it for anyone who wants to serve a Hispanic ...
I had a medical interpretation class where we used this book. As a native Spanish speaker and fully bilingual Span-Eng speaker I was able to spot a few mistakes (maybe 3 or 4 in the whole book) but learned a lot of medical terminology in both languages. It also teaches cultural aspects so I recommend it for anyone who wants to serve a Hispanic population through medicine.

Promise Online Materials that can not be accessed.
We bought several of these books to teach Medical Spanish and we can not access the online materials when calling the publisher they were not helpful. We will have to find a book from a publisher that really wants to help Institutions implement their book.
