## Description

Product Description The DayOne Waterbag is a 2.5-gallon (10-liter) family-sized water purification unit with integrated filter and backpack straps. The DayOne Waterbag, along with the P&G Purifier of Water packet, provides all four functions needed to treat and safely store drinking water: (1) collection, (2) transportation, (3) treatment, and (4) hygienic storage. It is compactly designed for use in situations such as outdoor recreation, hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, emergency situations, and natural disasters where the drinking water supply has been depleted or is of unknown quality. Each DayOne Waterbag comes with 60 P&G Purifier of Water packets and is reusable. The P&G Purifier of Water product is a 4-gram packet that treats 2.5 gallons / 10 liters of water in 30 minutes. The powdered packets are robust in removal of turbidity, cysts (>3 logs), viruses (>4 logs), bacteria (>6 logs), and arsenic from contaminated water sources such as creeks, rivers, lakes, and ponds. DayOne Response, Inc. is committed to providing clean drinking water: for every DayOne Waterbag purchased via retail channels, 600 liters of clean drinking water is donated to P&G’s Children's Safe Drinking Water program for disaster response efforts. The P&G is a trademark of the Procter and Gamble Company. From the Manufacturer Collect & Treat Water Anywhere The DayOne Waterbag treats any non-salt water up to US EPA and World Health Organization drinking water standards. It's See-Through! The DayOne Waterbag is uniquely designed to be see-through, allowing users to watch their water go from dirty and turbid to crystal clear and drinkable. What's in the Box? Each DayOne Waterbag comes with a pictographic instruction manual, 60 P&G Purifier of Water packets, a packet opener, and a backflushing syringe. Waterbag Filled The DayOne Waterbag is so light that it's pretty much just the weight of water on your back when it's full. So much easier than a jug, barrel, or jerry can! Before & After It's like magic! In just minutes, turn your water from dirty to clear and undrinkable to potable. Access to Water Anywhere The DayOne Waterbag offers you and your family peace of mind. Water is by and large the most important thing in an emergency. Whether you throw the Waterbag in the trunk of your car, your bugout bag, or your closet (or all three!), keep prepared with quick and easy access to safe drinking water with the DayOne Waterbag. About the Startup Describe your product in 3 words.Clean. Portable. Water. How did you come up with the idea for this product?CEO Tricia Compas-Markman: “I studied Civil and Environmental Engineering at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and during my Graduate studies, I worked with Dr. Tryg Lundquist to design and develop what is now the DayOne Waterbag technology. Shortly after graduating, I founded DayOne Response to go beyond an idea and create a solution and thriving business in water treatment technologies addressed for vulnerable populations. The motivation of the work very much stemmed from the natural disasters that were all over the media at the time -- the 2004/2005 SouthEast Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina -- where portable, compact, and easily deployable household water treatment tools were desperately needed. My own motivation for working on clean drinking water solutions started in my undergraduate work, when I co-founded the Cal Poly university chapter of Engineers without Borders. It was through this experience that I was exposed to what clean drinking water can mean to individuals, children, families, and overall communities. I had the privilege of working on designing and implementing a slow-sand filtration system at a local school in the hilltribe communities in Northern Thailand.”What makes your product special? The DayOne Waterbag is the most robust water treatment device among household level technologies. It can treat any kind of non-salt water to US EPA and World Health Organization drinking water standards due to its unique dual-treatment approach. Filters, alone, generally cannot catch viruses, while most chemicals cannot trap sediment or protazoan cysts. Additionally, the see-through design means users can quickly trust the treatment as they watch water go from dirty and turbid to crystal clear and potable, while the backpack straps make it easily transportable. What has been the best part of your startup experience?CEO Tricia Compas-Markman: “It’s exciting to see how an idea grows and comes to life. Two specific examples include: (1) As we build our team, I get excited about each new individual building their passion for our work, making it their own, and ultimately dedicating themselves to implementing a plan to scale our vision; (2) It is both thrilling and humbling to see the DayOne Waterbag solution be used in vulnerable situations (e.g.., for flood response or disaster efforts) and for communities to take ownership of treating water through the tools we provide them. This feedback provides motivation that fuels new ideas, innovation pathways, and partnerships while maintaining our focus as a company.”

    Large Volume of purified water

*by J***. on Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2016*

Now it's time for another 'Good Idea, Bad Idea.' Good Idea: the purification really works no matter how gross it looks while working, and it completely purifies a large amount of water. Bad Idea: Nearly impossible to clean completely as the brown stuff sticks to the bag like glue, it spills over a lot when closing the top, the spigot hose doesn't attach anywhere so it falls to the ground all the time, and the flow is very slow. Its worth the money no matter what other reviewers say (although if the price of the P&G packs are any indicator, you're really paying for those more than the bag), but probably more for base camp than survival prep. This has been another 'Good Idea, Bad Idea'.Update: After two summers of using the Day One and having seen negative reviews from people who don't even say they have bought the product, I'm increasing my rating. Everything above holds true, but understand that this is not just a purification/filtration unit for drinking water. It makes enough clean water to cook, do dishes, or wash off after a hike. It is not meant to compete or be like the Life Straw, Grayl, or even the Sawyer filters. I still say it is worth the price and a great product. If the review you've read just complains about how other products cost less that they believe do the same thing, without actually talking about this product, then I have no idea if they even bought the product or used it at all. I have. I paid for it. I didn't get it for free, and while I won't say it's the best product to have ever been invented, I think it's a pretty great one that I use each summer. Hopefully, for many more summers.

Suitable and useful for backcountry camping

*by D***N on Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2018*

6 of us ran approx 150 liters through this rig during a 6 night stay in Pioneer Basin (10,400', N of Mono Pass in the Eastern Sierra). Once we became accustomed to the simple procedure and timing it requires, we were very pleased. Be aware once you fill the bag and add the purifier powder you have to agitate for 5 min and wait another 25 min before you can use the water, and you must clean the bag (quick scrub and rinse) after each use. We had a 10 liter collapsible plastic cube plus some smaller water containers, so once we got ahead of consumption the delayed gratification was not inconvenient. Not effortless but beats the pants off all our pump-style filters, and also the Sawyer gravity system we tried some years back which was a complete non-starter. FYI we were filtering clear water at the outlet of a sub-alpine lake. This was likely not a challenge for the P&G technology but is representative of the water sources we prefer on backcountry trips. Would be interested to hear the experience of someone who's used this where there's visible algae and/or suspended matter.Recommended
