How does this compare with the original raw elements face + body product? particularly the smell and texture. i found the original to be very greasy.

I think it's about the same as the original product in terms of smell and texture. I really like it, but not sure I would buy it again for my toddler because it takes too long to rub in and the container isn't ideal for quick applications.

Is this a lotion or balm?

In between I would say. It's temperature sensitive so it'll melt and be more like lotion in hotter temp and will be more solid in cooler temperatures. Remember to place it in relative room temp.
