Inspired a young reader to move from a 3rd grade reading level to a 6th grade reading level.
Inspired a young reader to move from a 3rd grade reading level to a 6th grade reading level. These are books in a series that I read when I was a kid. They are great because they give the reader a bit more involvement with what they are reading, which is key for young readers who are still developing an interest in reading. It was for that reason that I bought this set to give to a friend's son who was struggling with his reading (reading at a 3rd grade level, but the boy is in 6th grade). These books contributed to sparking more interest in reading for him and helped to bring his skill level up to the appropriate level.UPDATE 7/18/2018: I'm happy to report that my friend's son graduated 6th grade and his reading level was where it was supposed to be by the end of the year. The dad thanked me profusely for buying these books for his son because he said they greatly contributed to his son becoming more interested in reading. Between these books, the teachers, the parents and of course, the efforts of the son, his reading level is now where it is supposed to be for his age.

My 8 year old son LOVES these books!!
I've had a real hard time getting my son to read more. It's the main part of his education especially in the 3rd grade. He doesn't like reading, he refuses and I needed something to motivate him more. These books are wonderful because while you are reading, you can make choices for a determined outcome. My son has issues with comprehending what he is reading and with these books is great practice, because sometimes when he makes a wrong choice in the book, he realizes it, goes back to read and then discovers the other choice is better.we read them together and he seems more into these books than anything he has read lately. He is learning to comprehend what he is reading which is also helping him in math and it has been a positive outcome for him.

Nice set of choose your own adventure books
Maybe a bit more on the science fiction side than my son wanted, but he's still reading them, and that's the goal!

As effective for getting today's kids reading as they were in the 80s
As effective for getting today's kids reading as they were in the 80s. Was having trouble getting my sons, especially my older 11-year-old son, into reading books other than graphical novel. Even though he scores exceptionally high in his reading and English in general, I can't get him to sit down and read. I bought him this sit for x-mas and my other son another set and I think they've done more non-required reading over winter break than they have the rest of the year combined. Also gives us an opportunity to read together, something my older son has generally "outgrown."COYA books are the gateway drug to lifetime reading habits.

Love them!
I'm in my 30s and I still love these books. I have read them multiple times and it's a different book each time because of the different choices you can make. A lot of my friends don't even know these "choose your own adventure" books exist until they see me with them. I would recommend these and will probably buy more.

For the reluctant reader
My son is a very reluctant reader. He has mild autism that comes with a reading disability. He was held back in the third grade by my request, and even with that was always 1-2 years behind his grade level. This year he is in 5th grade. Since I purchased these for him, he has been voluntarily reading. He carries these books with him to school and is excited to "find out what will happen next". At the beginning of this year, his reading level was grade 3.5. Yesterday he did his AR test at school and he is a 5.1!! This is since he began reading these books. I finally found something that hooks him into a story. He doesn't understand all of the words, but since his is into the story, he can get the word in context. This is a new skill for him. A "must buy" for those reluctant readers!
