On the close barrel iwd-16 tool. the collar at the back of the tool is completely open in the center. is that normal? iwd-12 & iwd-20 are not.

I checked mine and the same as you described. I’ve used on the 16 and worked very good.

Will this tool make good crimping? i'm using deutsch dt connectors, size 16 solid pins.

Does iwc-1424a work for deutsch size 20 stamped contacts?

Yes, IWC-1424A is for 14-24AWG open barrel or stamped terminals.

Are the crimpers ratcheting?

IWD Deutsch solid contact crimpers are ratchet while IWC weather pack crimper and open barrel crimpers are non-ratcheting.
