Great for a startup kit.
I love the set up and ease of use. But what I didn't like is I had to send 2 back before getting a 3rd on that wasn't broken in some form. Whether it was shipping or the delivery person's fault I'll never know but they were broken. Each time it was the glass pen. Obviously very fragile.

damaged and broken
this set is heavy duty and very nice, however the quill was not secured by tie down and had slid inside of the box and the feather was broken and bent. the glass "pen" was broken where it fits into the writing tip. other than those two items being damaged and broken, i am impressed with the set and am hoping my granddaughter will be as well. hoping to get replacement quill and glass pen since these were damaged by shipment. i believe they would have made it safely if they would have been better secured.UPDATE: the broken pieces will be replaced, submitted a request with detailed information and pics. 01/25/22- just received my replacement pieces, i am very happy. now let's see how my granddaughter likes it!

For the price, I guess...
As with everyone else, I love the look of this set. Even knowing it's cheap materials, usually a big NO for me, I really love looking at it. As for writing with it, I'm brand new to using dip pens, though I have fountain pens and the nibs that look like fountain nibs write fine. The calligraphy ones I'll have to experiment with more, but I think they're fine. And let me fortify the statement: For the price, it's fine. That being said, here are the negatives, I'll explain the pictures. The candle, I'm assuming, is to have a source of heat to melt the little wax bits. This candle may make it through one session before it melts right through the edge of its own wax.The jar of wax bits came with most the bottom blown out. And I'm actually intrigued, here, because there are a couple of slivers of glass inside the bottle and there's no glass anywhere else to be seen. The next 3 pictures display the gaps for the nibs to go into. Fitting the nibs in these gaps is a lot of trial, error and not a little frustration. For the quill (picture near the wax), the "fountain" nib does not hold in it steady. It wiggles while you write. I can not make it work, the nib isn't long enough I assume, because the longer ones hold fine. The middle gap is the wooden one, it seems more or less fine, though I feel like other writers, much like myself, wanted to try writing with the quill, but will instead now write with the wood, because... the last gap is that of the glass holder, and it is crooked. The glass goes into the metal handle at an angle and stops nibs from going in it at most angles and orientations. And as you can see, should you get the nib you want in at the angle you want, the glass holder itself is at a frustrating angle I'll never be able to write with. The last picture is of the beautiful set, with the glass holder proudly rearing its head above the foam like a brittle sea serpent.Fortunately and un, I bought 2, one for me the other a gift for my mom. I didn't realize I had so much to look for in hers before I wrapped it, so good luck mother. Also, a tip I learned the hard way, don't dip the wooden handle in rubbing alcohol, there's a finish on it that gets sticky.
