How does the reed strength compare to cane?

.5 stiffer than cane . If you play 3.0 cane , get 2.5 Plasticover

do you need to soak the reed before you play?

No, these reeds play without being wet. That is one of the reasons I use them. The reed doesn't dry out on stage when I am on break or playing my other horn. They also give a slightly buzzy sound to the sax (which I like). They may not last as long as regular cane reeds. Overall they are my preference.

Hi. I Play a #2 1/2 or 3 (Tenor), #2 (Alto) and a #1 1/2 or 2 (Soprano). I really can't tell the difference. Its like the same reed in a different box. Good luck.
