The 4th axis adds a great deal of additional functionality to your CNC machine that you wouldn't normally get otherwise. A 4th axis can be used to cut along an arc, or be used in what is called indexing mode or continuous mode, meaning the cutting is done from a stationary point or while in full (continuous) rotation. The 4th axis makes machining something complex like a gear possible
