Helpful for teens & their parents
This book was very helpful in several ways for both my 15 year old daughter who struggles with intense shyness/social anxiety and for me as a parent. My daughter felt relieved to know that she wasn't the only one to experience this and to realize that there is something she can do about how she is feeling. She felt understood as she was reading the explanations and examples that explained exactly how she was feeling and thinking in her own mind. It was also helpful for her to recognize what thoughts were correlated with those feelings, which took some time to really figure out at first. As a parent it's so helpful to know how to work on this and what steps to take that will be most effective. Now we are using the methods in this book over and over to practice and to slowly but surely overcome her social anxiety. The one thing that would make this book better is if they would include the worksheets separately in the back of the book or provide a website to download them once you buy the book so you can continue to make copies and practice. I've purchased other books that provide this and it allows you to really keep using the book to practice. As you're using the workbook and writing in it sometimes it's too late when you realize you've written on a page that you'd like to keep reusing for practice because just doing it once in the workbook is definitely not enough to overcome social anxiety. So don't write in the book if you want to be able to make copies and keep practicing!

A review from a psychologist and author that treats social anxiety for teens in group settings
I am a psychologist in private practice in Boston and author of The Emotional Extremist's Guide to Handling Cartoon Elephants: How to Solve Elephantine Emotional Problems Without Getting Run Over, Chased, Flattened, Squished, or Abandoned by Your True Cartoons ([...]).I specifically provide psychotherapy groups for adolescent girls struggling with social anxiety, self-harm, extreme emotions, panic disorder, eating disorders, bullying, and the like. My groups are highly valued, sometimes favored over individual therapy, and very cohesive. I am always looking for material to introduce into my groups. This book is a fabulous blend of exposure, traditional cognitive behavior therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and is most excellent for group discussion and practice. My clients responded very favorably to the exercises and discussion, and I will continue to keep it on hand for future use.I think decent material for adolescents is extremely hard to find- especially as a lot of "treatment" for adolescent groups often involves a bunch of activities or imposed situations that ignore what really IS going on in their lives. Teenagers need decent help and this is one user-friendly book that will help them find it.

Effective
I was a little worried about using this with a high functioning 16 yo but I'm finding it very effective. My client is able to relate to the language and examples and she's having many "aha" moments. I was initially turned off by the cartoons, but my client is not, and they are serving to illustrate her social experiences to a tee. I'll be using this book with other clients in the future.

Very helpful
Im a therapist and I have had clients who will not talk, articulate, open up, say their likes, dislikes, nothing. The thing is, without ANY information, how can I help them? This book has broken the pattern. Its great for those specific clients who are committed to therapy but held back by deeply routed fears of sounding dumb, feeling judged, weird, or being wrong.Im very grateful for this book for providing engagement and talking points for those clients.

This book is fantastic! It's well written
This book is fantastic! It's well written, provides factual information, and fun to read. The illustrations are beautiful and lend themselves to the feel of the book.I'm a psychotherapist who specializes in the treatment of social anxiety disorder. While I don't work with teens, this book is useful for my adult clients as well. I like the book so much, I bought a copy for my teen nephew who struggles with shyness. My sister-in-law and brother both read the book. It helped them to understand what was happening with their son. While this book is intended for teens who struggle with overcoming shyness and social anxiety. It's easily applicable to help with all forms of anxiety. I understand Ms. Shannon is coming out with another book for teen anxiety. I can't wait to get my hands on that one too!

Great
Love these books. This book has a lot of cartoons and is easy to understand. Also good for adults too if they want to keep it simple. I also like the one on self-esteem and ADHD.

Still Trying for a Break Through
I purchased the Kindle version and the hard copy. My granddaughter read Kindle version without me having to ask her to do so. However, she never discussed it with me. I prefer the hard copy so we can talk about it together. This is not to say she opens up more, but at least we are having a conversation.
