Sturdy, thick, easy to install. Half price on Amazon.
It was time to replace 2 very old ceiling fans. The old fans had bigger mounting brackets and were directly mounted to the underside of joists. My new ceiling fans required a 4-inch fan box. I had attic access and these worked perfectly. First, I used a 4-inch hole saw to make a hole in the ceiling, then mounted these on the vertical side of the joists. The fan screws provided are Grade 5 and have a serrated head, they look thin, but should be strong enough for a ceiling fan. A serrated head gives some protection against fan vibrations. I have attached the dimensions from the manufactures website in case you need more details or missing a screw. Very happy with this product. Less than half price on Amazon compared to big box stores.

Great for hanging fans
Well made, durable, and easy to install. The exact old construction box needed to replace an existing box. Replaced and secured the new box to a stud with ease to replace an old pendant light with a practical fan/light combination.

Great Product Super Sturdy
Did exactly what was described , works great old box broke and fan was ready to fall was able to replace everything in about an hour fairly easy, does take knowledge of electrical and remodel work however so if you are handy its super easy, if not well... call someone.

Sturdy
I have used 2 of these to out of 2 ceiling fans. They are easy to install and are very sturdy. No wobbling fans.

Works great
Used this to swap out an existing box so I could Install a fan. Worked like a charm. Was fairly easy to install, but I did sheer off one of the bolts that came with it, so you might consider an upgrade there. I have one more fan to install, so I'll probably be ordering another.

Limited thread engagement.
The support thread for the fan screws could have a longer engagement contact area than what you get. Disappointed, they went cheap. You can't tell from the photo since you don't see the back view. Some competing mounting boxes have a barrel insert that grabs more fan screw length than this one. This is made of a heavier gauge metal than a typical box, but the threads are just made from holes are punched and tapped. So yes the treads are stronger than a regular lamp box, but it doesn't instill great comfort in me. Even though it says rated for 70/150 pounds for old/new work, I wouldn't feel good using it for more than my 20 pound fan. Remember, most fans have at least some vibration, and over the years... well I said enough. Add barrel thread inserts and it would have been perfect.

Perfect to repair bad boxes
It seems our builder used a bad lot of ceiling boxes and we have had quite a few breaking. I discovered this box when our chandelier box broke and we needed something sturdier than the "old job" plastic boxes. After using this, I will never use the plastic boxes again. As a matter of fact, I order 3/4 extra just to have available as needed. Even though they require a little more work, this box attaches to the joists, rather than the drywall. Needless to say, it's a more solid installation.

Had to install a couple ceiling fans that had boxes next to joists. All old work. The bracket is heavy duty and confidentiality holds a heavy fixture without breaking a sweat. Surprisingly hard to find a box for this specific application.

Unfortunately, this product or similar products for old-work fan boxes cannot befound locally at home depot, lowes, etc. Fortunately, Amazon carries it and it's well worth it if you're planning on installing a fan or a heavy fixture at a location that currently doesn't support the weight. I messed up the installation a bit because i didn't read the instructions. I tried being clever and measuring the distance it would be to clear the drywall when installed. The instructions made it really clear that I can just place it against the drywall prior to fastening but I missed that part so i had to do it twice. Also, the product I received was actually a return item/open box. I was missing some fasteners but Amazon gave me some compensation for my trouble. I was able to get some lag bolts at my local hardware store based on the specs found on the instruction manual.
