Its been great for me
So I assume from all the bad reviews I have found; when this first came out that it was a horrible product. I have to say since I have had it its been great. I have tested HD videos from Amazon and Netflix streaming while being online. It does have its hiccups but thats more to do with wifi itself then the devices problems. I think its great and would recommend it to anyone. Now i would never use verizons overpriced plans but I was able to find a way around that. After some research this is what i have found to work best.1) It works better it you can keep it stationary, its fine in a car but while in the car dont move it around a lot. Give it room to breath. the more wide open space you can give it the better. So buried at the bottom of a purse is a bad idea2) For not having an external antenna it gets a good signal but think of it this way, if you cant get a signal with your phone this isnt going to get a great signal either3) Have your security settings to WPA2 (AES) this will work the best4) I have not had a problem but many say to change the 30 min inactivity turn off (set it so it does not turn off automatically after 30 mins)5) There is a detail app in itunes that lets you see more of the device without having to log into it. Search for "Hotspotsam" its free (sorry not andriod app that I could find)**Update 1/1/13: This app works will any hotspot that has an IP address of 192.168.1.1**6) Because it does have an internal antenna go into the settings and look at the signal strengh. setting the device a certain way will result in a little better signal (every little bit helps)7) UPDATE THE FIRMWARE (sorry this should be first)8) This is personal preference plus your equip must support it. But switch the wireless settings to b/g/n, by default it was b/g. I only use "N" devices9) Lastly set your wireless channel to either 1,6,or 11 (just know these are the only channels you should ever use). if you do choose to let it automatically choose your channel check to see if its on 1,6,11 if not that may be the cause of some of your troubles. You may have to change this if your in a crowded wifi area. There are free apps to let you know which channel is the less congested. Never be on a channel that is overlapping with another. being on the same channel as others is ok and normal, but overlapping channels are very badHope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to askUPDATE: 11/14/12 I have done an extensive road test with this little device and it was excellent. I took a work road trip from cleveland, OH to louisville, KY and was able to stream netflix from a roku the whole drive down. It did die around the 4 hour mark but I had a back up battery and no fault of the unit but KY had some spotty areas for connection. (before the trip I checked verizons coverage map and KY does have dead spots.) So I would have to still say this was a great investment if (see below)1) you buy it used not full price2) and if you can get unlimited data, verizons tiered data plans are way over priced.3) follow my above instructions

Not what I expected
When I received this I didn't realize it needed to be activated. The mobile hotspot it great ,but not from verizon. Verzion isn't cheap and we all know that it isn't very affordable. It doesn't come with the activation chip which gives it the hotspot capability. I would recommend it if you need to replace one and can afford verzion's costs.

A lot better then their USB modem!
After a month of this I notice their is no battery life. I get maybe 15 minutes, but that's it. When the battery runs out and you're not paying attention, you get knocked off-line and you don't know it till you click on a link. I just plug it in now, but when it finishes charging it sometimes boots me off too. The connection is a lot better, but you get kicked off line a lot!

Product works as expected
The product works as advertised and does what you need it to do, which is provide mobile 4G service, However, it has several added benefits that many of you may not know about. The mobile hotspot, when providing 4G service to one or an number of phones via the WiFi hotspot feature, is saving you money. See, when you run Mobile Hotspot on your phone as an Application, you are literally FRYING your battery. In other words, it gets so hot from being overworked (you can watch in person and see how fast your juice goes down) that it can permanently damage the battery and other components in some even top-brand phones. Also, that battery life goes down faster than you can charge the phone, so you have a reduction in your time to live on the cell phone where if you had a Mobile "MyFi" hotspot as they call these, you would free up CPU resources, optimzie bandwidth with a separation of duty, and increase the life of your cell phone. Now, you may just need to spend $40 to replace a battery, but I'd rather not risk damaging the rest of my $900 Samsung Note 3... ;) A word to the wise - keep in mind that these things require their own line to be added to your account. Verizon wanted $20/month for mine at the time (December 2014). Jeremy Jay

Meh.
For ~$25 off contract and used, it's not a terrible buy... but it has a lot of issues, the firmware is buggy and my devices (MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iPhone, you get the idea) always have issues connecting. If you need a Jetpack/Mobile Hotspot for business, look elsewhere (I hear good things about the MHS291L), or just use your phone!

Excited yet disappointed
This is my first time ever shopping this way, but the experience was easier than I expected. The product arrived on time even around the holidays. I just wish it was described as a Verizon account only device instead of the pre-pay device I needed. Big mistake, if I had purchased the correct device my rating would be 5 stars

Haven't had any real issues
I've had this for about 2 yrs.On the 5GB plan w/ Verizon and usually avg about 4GB/mo.My cell phone is connected via Sprint which I hate, but forced since it's a work phone.I have a iPhone4s, so I'm still stuck with 3G, but the internet is slow and spotty. So, I don't want to spend a full $90-100/mo for a whole new personal phone, so I spend $50/mo for this device and it's been quite good to me.I usually have this constantly connected in the car, plugged in to the car charger so I can listen to Spotify or Pandora w/o skipping since my Sprint connection is usually terrible...The battery life, I must admit, is not ideal. But I've experienced other devices and also other tethering cellphones, but battery life is usually bad for those devices as well so... I didn't feel the need to dock off a star since I don't know many devices which are significantly better in regards to this.If I didn't have it connected to the car charger on a full battery, I would say this lasts 3-4hrs...Driving, connected to my phone, with constant internet activity.So... I actually bought 2 extra batteries for this plus a separate battery charger for when I'm traveling.

It didn't work
We received the hotspot in appropriate packaging, but when we tried to turn it on no power. Even after charging it we were unable to get it to turn on.
